    I having problems with my 1952 M38A1

the transmission, transfer case, and front and rear axles are all geared like a 1952 M38A1. I seem to recall, when I first got the vehicle, that it was hard to get it to about 55 without the engine screaming. I installed an overdrive, with a rebuilt T90 transmission and T18 transfer case...

    53 m38a1 compatability with 55 cj5

The extra leaf springs just make the ride more uncomfortable, you don't really need them. The exhaust is routed entirely different. A good source for military parts is Midwest Military. John really knows his stuff, most of it is NOS equipment, and the prices are better than most civilian jeep...

    Out With The New (Winch)...

I installed the military in cab heater-you should try that, thing puts out some serious heat! You can stick with the soft top and still be warm in the winter.

    My M38A1

Well, months and months later, and I still don't have a running vehicle. It now has a new frame, all new suspension, all new bearings and joints, new tires, new gauges, and I could go on as the dollars pile up. Nothing worked, with the exception that the vehicle fired up, and the lights would...

    Out With The New (Winch)...

I've seen feedback from people that traded out their PTO for a Warn 8274 (the only electric winch they thought was worth trading for) and now they wish they had stuck with their old PTO. They say that thing was unbreakable.

I don't currently have a fair lead. The one I posted is definitely what the original looks like, and I'm trying to avoid putting something on there that looks too modern. This is the one I just bought.

Not only is the PTO more era correct (they never put an electric winch on a M38A1), but they are often stronger as well. It basically has as much power as your engine, which it runs off of. You can dangle the vehicle off a cliff, and pull it up to safety on the PTO.

I guess you just put a regular fairlead in front of the PTO winch? I have a 1952 M38A1 that I put a Ramsey 200L PTO winch on. With a little fabrication, it all fits (even behind my Saturn overdrive), but I don't have the military issue fairlead. I'm wondering if I'll have to fabricate it.

    My M38A1

I posted this on another forum thread, but figured I'd post it here too! Due to a very unscrupulous seller, I bought a "cosmetically sound" jeep that needed almost everything replaced on it. even the frame was rusting away, and I had to buy a new one from a scrapyard in California. That said...

Almost done restoring my 1952 M38A1

Due to a very unscrupulous seller, I bought a "cosmetically sound" jeep that needed almost everything replaced on it. even the frame was rusting away, and I had to buy a new one from a scrapyard in California. That said, I'm finally almost done, and will post pics when I can. The frame arrived a...

    My M38A1

These are some of the internet photos he conned me with. You'll notice, they are at a very low resolution. I'll post pictures of the finished Jeep when I have it.

    My M38A1

It's been awhile since I posted here. I bought a 1952 M38A1 from Hanson Mechanical Collection for $10,000 back in May. I was assured, with a slew of pictures and internet promises, that it was "like it just rolled off the showroom floor". I have since had to replace all the gauges, all the...

    I just bought an M38A1

Well, the guy that rebuilt mine, swears it was all good. The steering linkage is visibly shot, and I had to get new tie rod ends, a new pitman arm, a new steering box, a new steering wheel, working gauges, new shocks, new tires (the old ones were dry rotted), and in an effort to further clear...

    I just bought an M38A1

You guys have convinced me, I am sticking with a T90. Mine might need a rebuild, or maybe I just need to practice double clutching more! I'll be getting an overdrive from Herm too. So, that means the only change I am making to the M38A1 is new brakes up front. The truck has no vacuum assist...

    I just bought an M38A1

The T90 is not synchronized between 1st and 2nd gear. The T18 has a granny low 1st, so you start in 2nd. Are you saying it would lower the values of the Jeep because it isn't original? It is authentic to the era, it came out in 1955, and the Military used it in some trucks.

    I just bought an M38A1

I found someone selling original, unused M38A1 steering boxes! I'm trying to keep my Jeep as true to the original as possible. The only serious changes from the original I have now is putting in a T18 tranny, and front disc brakes. The T18 is a much better tranny, all the main gears are...

Best gasoline to use in a M38A1

Does anyone know? They only had leaded gas back in 1952, when my Jeep was made.

    I just bought an M38A1

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to fly up and down the highway. I'll mostly do 30-40. I just want to go 55 on the highway without overworking the engine when I go out of town to things like camping sites. At 20MPH, I have to stomp down hard on the brakes. I won't add a vacuum assist, or bigger...

    I just bought an M38A1

I can add disc brakes without any drilling or cutting. The current drums have no stopping power, and even if I go up from 9 to 11, I still doubt it will be nearly as much as the disk brakes. The tranny is worn out. I could either put in another T90, or upgrade to a T18. The T18 being virtually...

    I just bought an M38A1

Installed seat belts. Ordered spacers so I can do a front disc brake conversion. I am replacing the T90 with a T18 transmission, will I still need an overdrive? Do I need just the Gamma Goat lenses? And to wire my right side tail light so it comes on with my left side one? And finally, the big...
