M37 as First Car? Anybody Done It?

I agree with the CUCV choice. I had a deuce I drove in the snow from Maryland to NJ with only one functioning windshield wiper and no heat. It was an awful, long ride but we laugh about it now. I'm currently working on a M37 and I suspect it will be a similar ride on the long hauls as the deuce...

    Rear Pinion Seal Adapter

FYI. Not sure why it's upside down but you get the idea.

    Rear Pinion Seal Adapter

The original seal is a hair over, I'd think going with that measurement would be the best way to go. Not entirely sure though...

    Rear Pinion Seal Adapter

Just measured it with a caliper. It's 4" exactly. The seal measures at 4.025". Not sure how that's possible, but there it is!

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

There is a shot of the race BEFORE I pulled it out. Note the gap, is that normal?

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

I've got two gas tanks, trying to figure out if I can combine them in to one working one. They are both pretty rough. I just realized though that my diner truck has a good tank! Problem solved :-)

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

Finally making some progress! Got the rear axle attached to the frame, and started pressing new races in to the brake drums. Question though? Is there supposed to be a gap like that on the outer race? It was like that on the race hen I pulled it off, and I couldn't push the new one on any...

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

I no longer have my truck, so this little 5x8 trailer will have to do. Added a leaf to each of the springs and had custom U-Bolts made up since I couldn't find NOS ones. Put new slave cylinders on while I had the axle up on the bench. Those shoes were the originals, I just cleaned them up. They...

Getting organized. A shot of the outside of my workshop, and my heater! It was cold out there this winter. More prep work.

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

Finally got the frame at my new house and workshop! The purchase of this house has been what's slowed me down, but I'm back! And now I have a space to work in. I also installed an air system :-)

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

Breaking apart the third member from the axle housing. I may have posted thee photos already? There's me using me Harbor Freight soda blaster. The thing is great for the most part. Gets the job done. It makes a mess, but cleanup is easy since it's just baking soda. Just wash it away with a hose.

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

My dad and I taking apart the axles. This was originally his truck. He didn't get to working on it quite as planned, and my mom threatened to get rid of it if I didn't do something with it! That's how I got roped in to this whole mess :-)

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

Transfer case again. I was missing a gasket from my set, so I purchased this gasket punch set at an auto parts store in their bargain bin for like $7. Then I got some gasket material, traced is, cut it out and punched the holes. Good as new!

    M37 Restoration - Newbie Attempt

More transfer case work. Rebuilding this was a lot of fun. Not that hard if you are working with someone who knows what they are doing!
