i bought one of those $130 starters from ebay and 2 weeks later its bad again . im having a very hard time i sent it back to them and they recieved it 2/23/09 and havent heard anything yet. wish i would have bought it from a more reputable source or did a 12 volt swap now.
ok to get started i have a 1985 m1008. the m1008 it too much of a hoss for what i use it for 75% just daily driving and 25% work truck. i was thinking about finding a m1009 since i use it mainly just for transportation. my 1008 gets about 16mpg. what does a stock 1009 get? it has to be better...
a friend and i were talking about cucv's and we were trying to figure out what the government paid for them new. we were guessing probably $30,000 for a m1008. i dont know for sure but i thought that somebody on here would know.

most of the parts are the same as a civilian truck since you already changed yours to 12 volts. Chevrolet used the 6.2 in many trucks / vans from 1982-1993 . i have found better bargains on the internet. but thats just my opinion, good luck with you truck.
so my starter died last week.it was cranking like the batteries were really low, but i had just put 2 new batteries on it, but it had a horrible burning smell. anyway i got it towed home and pulled the old starter off and tore it down, well actually i took the back cover off and burnt up pieces...
if it was a head gasket smoking like that it would be using quite a bit of water and there would be water in the oil also the smell of antifreeze instead of fuel.
a friend of mine had one that had sat for a long time it ran good but it just smoked like yours and he ran it hard for a while and it straightend up in a couple days
