Its been a long time since I posted. Mostly because I took everyone's sage advice and use the TMs for repair/maintenance. However, I have something that doesn't appear to be in the TMs.
I took my 1970 M35A2 for a drive today and noticed an unusual sound when releasing the clutch in 3rd, 4th...
I have questions for the hive mind.
I have two boxes both labeled NSN 2540-01-245-2444 on the outside (identical Military Compliance Labels). The documentation/manifest/instructions on the inside are different. One says it is kit number 12301438. The other specifies it is kit number 12301439...
I have used a couple Kat's Hot Pad Heaters before. However, I switched to magnetic pan heaters because of issues getting the pads to stay stuck to any oily pan...
In my experience, what you describe is normal for an unmodified NHC 250.
It is a 14.0 L engine rated for 250 HP. It is not going to be "faster" than a more modern 8.X L engine with the same HP (or higher).
With regard to empty versus loaded acceleration, I found very little difference. I...
Fresh, strong batteries are a must.
I was having difficulty getting my M923 (NHC-250) started on 0 degree days. My battery tester revealed that I was only getting half the cold cranking amps from my batteries. Swapped them out and it fired up with no ether required.
I have 395/85R20 on one of my Deuces and there isn't enough room for standard link chains on the rears. Meaning, if I install standard link chains on one tire it WILL contact the other tire while moving. Installing chains on both is a non starter. They will bind.
12.5R20 (335/80R20) is about...
I can confirm that Cummins part #218505 (alternator bracket) DOES NOT FIT the M939 equipped with the NHC250. It is not a drop in part and would require significant machining to match the OEM bolt holes.
The engine is running great. Oil level is right where it should be. Maybe a half-quart to a quart low. Doesn't smell like diesel.
I replaced the seal on the fuel pump last year after it started dumping diesel in the oil. Doesn't look like its making oil.
I initially thought that as well, but this happened after I had it out on the highway for ~30 minutes running 2500 RPM. It was a warm day so engine temps were around 200 degrees for a full 20 minutes.
Anyway, a new gasket has already been ordered, but I don't want to mask a problem by moving...
My starter keeps cutting out because it gets completely covered/soaked in oil from a leak in the exhaust flange.
It is a White LT 465 with about 1000 hours on it. No turbo. It runs great. Oil pressure is consistently 30-40 PSI at 160 degrees. Pressure drops to 20 PSI when the temps get up to...
That is an excellent point and one that I considered before drilling holes.
The trailer I will be towing has a 42" tongue length and is 68" wide. I can go ~90 degrees without the trailer and the back of the truck touching. If the truck is at 90 degrees to the trailer I have screwed something...
BTW, if you really want a Curt I would recommend a Curt 15800 receiver hitch. It is designed to bolt onto any 34" C-channel truck frame. We tested fitted one to the 5-ton before installing the Draw-Tite above. The Curt will work, but for a variety of reasons I went with the Draw-Tite.
The...
I think Curt Manufacturing must have changed the specs in recent years, because their website says the 15400 has a 17,000 lb rating and a 2" receiver.

Those are close...
I just installed a Draw-Tite 41947 Class V Ultra Frame on my 5-ton. Looks like it will do the job. I didn't like having to drill holes in the frame, but it looked like the only realistic option.
I like it so much that I bought a second for the Deuce. (Didn't hurt that it was only $166 shipped...
I installed the Draw-Tite 41947 Class V Ultra Frame on my 5-ton. Before I installed it, I also clamped it to the frame of my Deuce. It will work very well on either truck. If you have a Am_zon Prime membership they are only $166 shipped (as of 12/11/16).
I have a second one on the way for...
As a professional chemist, the first few paragraphs of that article made me cringe. "Mr. Speed" is trying really hard to sound like he knows what he is writing about. He says lots of words that sound correct to a non-chemist, but, unfortunately, doesn't appear to have a clue. There is so much...
They aren't OEM but I have used these.

FMS Small Shock/Bungee Cord Hook Closed
or
Secure It Quick Bungee Cord Hook
The first couple links are where you want to go on each. You can get them from Amazon or pebay. The FMS has a more original look.
