I drove it over the wknd to get a feel for what it needs tuning wise. From my calculations the mileage was 12-13mpg on country hwy, backroads and a lil bit of stopn go.... *I kept it no higher than 55mph
It was about what I expected. Hopefully getting it tuned will improve the mileage
Rebuilt 5.7 Vortec installed.. * .030 rebuild with the GMPP 395 cam and updated MPFI injectors.
The computer needs tuning, but it'll get up to 60mph with ease
Yes the AC works lol
I wound up doing a Vortec 350 w/factory EFI. Upgraded to the MPFI injectors, GMPP 395 cam and retained the turbo 400 trans. Put in a 99 ECU and the shop tuned it.
I'm running a true 33.5in tall tire and the 4.56 gears. That combo moves the M1008 pretty quick.. it'll scoot down the road.
I a set of BFG KM2 and Toyo MT 255 85r16 on my trucks. Both sets were purchased a few months apart in 2018. Both brands have been great, but I can tell the Toyos are holding up just fine. The BFG KM2 will probably have to be replaced this year...
Vortec 5.7 with a carb I assume..
I went with the factory EFI and the GMPP 395 hydraulic roller cam. Even with a dead cylinder(more on that later) and the ecu overcompensating the air/fuel mixture it'll still move my M1008 with ease
Oh it's a night n day difference in power... not even close. Plus the Vortec 350 works better with the 4.56 gears. The tach is showing 2900rpm at 60mph. 3000-3500rpm is easy for a 350.
Yes it will run on 87 octane, but I prefer to run mid grade 89 octane.
I haven't gotten a pulse on the...
The Vortec 350 swap is completed. Just needs a lil find tuning and AC lines. The only upgrades were MPFI injectors and the GMPP 395 cam.
The truck runs like a sewing machine; step on the pedal and it winds up n goes. With ths 255 85r16 tires it'll run 60mph at 2900 rpm
**if anyone does the...
The mech went to swap the cam in the Vortec 350 and the front bearing looked a lil suspect. We decided to play it safe and put in new cam bearings. The rod and main bearings were good to go. I'm getting anxious to get the Vortec swapped in...
*i decided to swap in the same hydraulic roller cam...
It was the last ride for the ole worn out 6.2 diesel. Drove it down to the shop to drop it off. When it comes back it'll have a Vortec 350 in it.
* When I bought the 86' M1008 in June 2018, I knew I was eventually going to have to swap out the engine. I can't complain, I got 5yrs out of the ole...
