MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

I mounted a single 50 gal aluminum refer fuel tank on front of my M116A1 trailer. However, moving & hooking up trailer to truck with "full fuel load" up front was challenging, if not a bit precarious at times when using a High-Lift Farm Jack to lift & align. I ended up having to spend some $$...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Agree that "Steel Wool" can provide good mouse barrier deterrent (holes, etc). However, I would be a bit nervous that if not jammed in tightly or otherwise secured firmly in place that the Steel Wool might become dislodged and end up touching load terminals. Though, it would surely be a good...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Just a tip... you should consider closing off the ~ 1/2" opening where the wires would normally feed into the load terminals on the AC Reconnection box. I had one of my boxes taken out by mice and it was up on its trailer like yours. Mice love to nest in the bottom of that box in winter...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Just out of curiosity... is the plan to use the MEP-002's slave port with your CUCV? If so, do you need to use a 2 pin to 1 pin Nato adaptor to use Nato slave jumper cable? I'm considering buying a Nato slave cable to enable jumping one genset off the other if the need arises. However, that...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

As far as how the MEP-002/003 Main Breaker works you should read this Sticky by Sewerzuk if you haven't already. It explains a lot & dives pretty deep into characteristics of that breaker. I need to re-read it myself again as I've forgotten a lot of what was said. Be sure to read the sticky...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Yep, the spark IIRC is some of the capacitors drawing current to charge. I seem to recall it was some tantalum Capacitors on the Voltage Regulator Board. That's why its good to have a battery disconnect switch to prevent long term battery drain (parasitic drain). I put one across the...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Well just so happens my recently aquired #5 Genset didn't come with a cover over S7 start switch. So I snapped a picture for you to view whats underneath cover in that area. If you select the photo & zoom up it shows the clearance more clearly to the lift solenoid screw you are having the...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Yep the M116A2 trailer tarps apparently dried up in the market. I did purchase a new one a few years ago from a SS member that was new & then affordable. Last year there was someone selling new ones on eBay that said he had fabricated by one of the OEM mfg's. His price with shipping was a...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Appears to only need a bit more clearance. Wondering if there is a way to slightly reform the switch cover while it is screwed on up tight... like put something round (A phillips screwdriver?) on the offending edge of cover there where the screw hits & give it a slight whack with a hammer to...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

BTW, I noticed that on my all original 1986 model MEP-002a it has a Phillips Head Screw with paint on it matches the genset's desert sand paint, holding on the Dust Cover over the S7 starter switch. Seems like that would be better than the "threaded stud & wingnut" protruding out of Dust Cover...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Uh ohhhh, its starting... the generator parts hoarding syndrome is sprouting! I've attributed it to some kind of "weird field effect" when standing too close to a running generator. Unfortunately, "No Known Cure" other than to advance from buying parts to buying "Complete Spare Generators"...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Even if it's not the OEM starter misbehaving... having a Type II starter on the spares shelf is a good thing! I bought one as a spare years ago and having it has intimidated my OEM starters to always work. ;) Incidentally, my new to me #5 generator came missing its OEM starter with a Type II...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Be careful, once you paint that trailer & get it looking all nice you might end up having to add a few things: Generator AUX fuel Tank | SteelSoldiers and more things: Generator Spider Box | SteelSoldiers

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

I don't think this genset could have found a better home! (y) Doing very good work & inspiring me to continue looking after my own MEP-002a herd. These old MEP's have LOTS of life left & will serve you well in times of need if you treat them right and maintain them.

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

You're a get-n there! BTW, I had to replace the same fuel line (ck valve to IP) on my recently acquired #5 genset & another of my gensets a while back. Thats the most common fuel hose to develop a leak/weap due to the somewhat abrupt 180 turn at bottom. Next time one of mine develops a leak...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

I use the spray DeOxit electrical cleaner. It helps to remove oxidized tarnish off the contacts & lubricates the switch points. Yes, the switch is hard to turn by design. Be careful to not manhandle it...fast hard torque twisting can damage or break it. I usually start by rocking the switch...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

When you have a few minutes to spare you should go ahead and remove the front access cover (below the load terminals) off the AC Distribution box. Inspect it inside for critter damage. Hopefully no critters found their way into the small opening by load terminals. As a quick critter...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

That's encouraging progress! Great to hear the injection pump is not frozen & appears to be functioning. You might consider cracking the injector lines at the injectors to determine if you have good fuel flowing in the lines. Hopefully the injectors are not stuck & pop off pressure is good...

MEP-002A Exhaust Question plus Machine Resurrection

Even if water didn't infiltrate the IJ Pump old fuel that turned into gummy varnish & sat within IJ pump over time can wreak havoc. Ray70's advice on the IJ Pump is right on the money! The prior use of starting fluid may be a symptom of problems with glow plugs and/or the intake manifold...
