Are hydraulic winches hard to come by?

What if you removed the cross bars from the winch and made your own mount to give more clearance to the winch cable/drum? Then you could hard mount the winch and just have enough space above and below the drum to route the cable out either side. If you did that you could possibly mount the winch...

Are hydraulic winches hard to come by?

Yeah that's an interesting idea, and you wouldn't need the 24v electric winch/hoist. I was just thinking of twist from rotating the crane around, but as long as you didn't go in circles it should be pretty minimal.

Are hydraulic winches hard to come by?

Theoretically I guess it could. The winch frame is open to the top so routing the cable out should be easy enough. For a jib crane I would be curious how much twist it would introduce. Interesting idea though!

Are hydraulic winches hard to come by?

Not sure what you mean by a rotating mount. The hydraulic winch setup has the drum close to the frame rail, with the hydraulic motor on the outboard side. The winch frame acts as bracing to the frame rail. With this setup the winch drum stays close to the frame and keeps the pull more in-line...

Are hydraulic winches hard to come by?

Mine is a winch truck, but like snowtrac said, they are not very powerful. It is rated for 11k of pull on the first layer of the drum. The truck empty with winch weighs over 18k. It is only like 6k of pull with a full drum. The line is pretty long so you can use a snatch block, but still. I do...
