    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

I'm sure I'm somewhat wetstacked too... I may dig out my bigger load and give it a go and see if that loads it enough (an old water heater...) My fuel usage was decent, and it does appear that the oil level issue I thought I had was just the fact that when running it was on unlevel ground...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

I figured I'd post a picture of the MEP and one of its tow vehicles (I usually tow it with my big Dodge, but it was away on a trip when I moved the generator.) The Hummer is a 95 NA, and it moves the set along reasonably well.

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Ike, no the MEP-004 has two electric pumps. It does have a Stanadyne/Roosa Master pump, which is why I'm wondering if I do have a leak. I'll recheck the oil level when I get it back in its parking spot (which is flat and level) and see how it looks. We shut down at about 9 PM last night, and...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

I guess I should also make sure the generator's level when checking the oil too! Seems the left side is on a bit of a hill, I forgot that. Maybe the oil level issue is a 'red herring'. Can anyone tell that the forum where I spend most of my time is down? :-P I'm running out of 'fun' things to...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

It appears I have slightly more oil in the pan after four hours running then when I started. Not a horrible amount, but enough that once I shutdown I will have to investigate... I could be wrong, but don't think so! Oil is still spotlessly clean, too, which is good--no blow-by.

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Irene turned off the lights a couple of hours ago. Rather localized (daughter down the road has lights, we don't). So today was the first real test of the generator... We'll call it a success, with a couple of minor things. Hit the breaker switch to put it online, and nothing. Odd, did a bulb...

Humm, a -10 manual? I have: TM 9-6115-464-12 TM 9-6115-464-24 TM 9-6115-464-34 but no -10! Ah, found it... Thanks Igor at www.liberatedmanuals.com, that was an easy one. Of course it didn't quite answer where the recommended storage location for the slide was, so I'm going to just use the...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Well, the Weare NH show as kind to me... I found a slide hammer for the ground rods, at a very good price ($15, it was new). Now, I don't think the MEP004 was originally supplied with the slide hammer, but if it was, where would it have been stored? Won't (obviously) fit in the ground rod box...

Hi Joe, I do remember you from HML days. You may want to try TSC for batteries as they may have a better selection. Don't know if you have one near you however.

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Odd, maybe the spring is too long? I guess a comparison with the good one might work at showing what's wrong with the one we made...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

I bet it does! probably be ideal for that use. A number of us tow them with 3/4 ton HD trucks. You need good brakes (and a 1/2 ton generally won't have good enough brakes--it is amazing when you see how big the brakes on my Dodge 2500 HD are...) No, you drain the air tank (drain on...

For xmission and anyone who wants 'em, here are the MEP-004 manuals in PDF form. Gotten from LOGSA last year, so should be as current as possible... http://www.hipson.net/military/LO_9-6115-464-12_(Lubrication_MEP-004A).pdf http://www.hipson.net/military/TM_9-6115-464-12_(Operator_MEP-004A).pdf...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Most run just fine at 120/208 (not 240) and you can get about 67% full rated current without any problems. You can also take that third 120 volt leg and use it to power some circuits as well. Does take a bit of customized wiring of your transfer switch, but it is very possible to do. My manual...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

JBK: That's great. I'd not worry just yet about a few drops of oil, consider it an automatic rust proofing system instead! My hour meter is also spastic, but I think that is a relatively new problem, it seems to read about half what it should, but works in fits and starts. I'm going to pull it...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Hey Dan, good to see another MEP-004 owner nearby. I got my filters from CarQuest, (numbers below). My local store usually has them in stock (because they know I use them) but even if out of stock, they get them for next day delivery. Easy. Oil: CarQuest number 85004 (WIX number is 51653)...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

There should be two wires in (120 volts AC) and they are not polarity sensitive. There are also two wires to the meter itself, and they are polarity sensitive, if you hook it up backwards the meter won't read. Both the meter and the transducer will have a + sign marked on the output wire side...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Remember that the meter and the transducer are supposed to be 'matched' Of the two that I have the meters have different full scale current values (one is 200 and the other is 300) and so the transducer you have may not work with the meter even if both are good. Other than checking the...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Well, some updates... I did a run today (actually two runs as we took a break for lunch and a parts run). First run was about 45 minutes. It was cold (about 32 degrees) but it started up reasonably well. No nasty surprises, that was pleasant. My oil leak is fixed! I had a recurring leak on...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Just a followup... When we started it we found the volt meter to be reading about 20 volts too low. Since I had a replacement, the fix was easy. But... After installing the new volt meter, I tested its calibration again against my digital meter (used the AC line and a suicide cord...) and the...

    It's alive! (MEP-004...)

Sorry, but I just can't resist... We got the MEP-004 running today, despite really damp weather. A lot of problems with leaks from the injectors, and the voltmeter seems off by a bit (reads low) but other than that it both runs and sounds really good. Oh, and it makes power too. Mostly I'm...
