new diesel smog laws in california

Does anybody know how the new smog laws for diesels are going to affect the deuce?? I know its a multi fuel but it still falls into the diesel engine category...Also it seems that the burning of the alternative fuels(WVO,UMO,ATF.....) would cause more smoke and therefore you could get caught by the smoker's law...?

I figured... Being a multifuel I was hoping for an exemption... of course I do live in Kali...what was I thinkin'...So, I thought what about bobbing it, keeping over 10k lbs for the lift law(frame height)...??Could you get a reweight certificate and call it a HD pickup...??

I think that "Historic Vehicle" license plates will be the only way to avoid repowering the truck or installing a particulate filter and reburn system. This is not in effect yet, but you can bet it's coming soon to our (insert derogatory adjective here) state.

Not to rub it in guys, but I'm glad I left that state, The construction company my dad works for will pretty much go under if/when that law comes into effect, with the economy the way it is now, all its gonna do is put more people outta work. But back to the question at hand I think JDToumanian hit it spot on.

11echo.... I saw the thread on that... but mine shows I'm curious to see if the vehicle can be reregistered as a HD pickup.... I want the big truck, without the commercial b.s.... and If I'm correct they are keeping these laws to Commercial vehicles over 14k....??

You may want to think about a good HHO generator. If you added this is would cut the smoke down and maybe add a power boost.

I don't think so... In CA, pickup trucks ARE commercial vehicles, registered by GVWR. The deuce would be ~16k-21k depending on what you told them it's GVWR was. Besides, the warning letter I got from the DMV for my two Ford F250 diesels stated that the law was (going to be) for ALL DIESEL POWERED VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING WITHIN THE STATE. They were giving me a "heads up" that soon I would no longer be able to register these trucks unless they had been repowered or retrofitted.

Besides, the warning letter I got from the DMV for my two Ford F250 diesels stated that the law was (going to be) for ALL DIESEL POWERED VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING WITHIN THE STATE. They were giving me a "heads up" that soon I would no longer be able to register these trucks unless they had been repowered or retrofitted.

A legally purchased and registered vehicle will now be illegal to register, and most likely illegal to sell....:evil:

When people like you and me leave this state, it only reduces our voting base and further eliminates resistance to insane laws such as these. Thus, allowing more and more to be passed. Slippery slope indeed.

I have a diesel (multifuel) M52A2 and I did not get any such letter.

I have a lot of diesel powered stuff... I didn't get a letter for my Mercedes sedan, M35, or my M52, but I did for my two Ford F250s. I don't know why....

Diesel smoke in CA

Calm down, guys!
First, then regulation are for NEW trucks EPA seven as far as I know is actual level. Withthe old Army Diesels you of corse will not fullfill theses limit, even with a filter or what so ever. But your "smoke" will fall down and will not be registered as fine dust particulates. Your engine can not even produce these particulates. Your particulates you can collect on the street withg a broom!
The only think you can do to protect the environment is to keep your engines at the best setting of injection timing. However, this will not make it a modern engine.
The modern engines, ready for EPA 10 or highter, make very small particulates, which easyly pass your nose filter system, will pass your lounge and go into the blood, if not even will pass into your cells. So the envirement friendly engine are our old ones with 5000 or 6000 miles a year; the modern stuff endangers our health! If in doubt, ask an emission expert of your nearest truck/off road engine maker.
However, the politicians and the filter industrie will not agree to this. It is their profit, this man mordering filtering!

JDTOUMANIAN, Hesperia CA! Ever buy stuff from Military Surplus Parts in Hesperia? We come out to San Jose once in a while and I always drive over to Hesperia to visit a friend of mine named Bob Gumbert (Gump). We have property in McArthur and would love to move there but now that laws are changing for diesel vehicles that's out of the question. I would probably faint at the cost of registering my M35A2C and M1008 CUCV. Don't they grandfather historic vehicles like ours in California or is that out too? Al Broadbent

  • just so everyone knows... there is a historic exclusion... but I want to use mine, not just look at it....
  • also there are smog laws for diesels 1998 model year and newer 8501 lbs and less...
  • Any body know where the exclusion for the 26k lbs deuce falls? I don't see anything that says higher GVWR vehicles, that are OLD are excluded?? Is there something in the fine print ???

the way I heard the ruleing if youre fleet has less than 1000 hp you might be exemet from this law ,,but the real fear is youre fleet can consit of youre off road equipment all so so hope you can aford a $17.000 sooit trap for youre truck bill

I don't agree with the implementation of their new diesel legislation. While there is a big problem with the air quality out there, it's inexcusable to lay so much of the blame on a narrowed segment of the vehicles/equipment/machinery contributing to it. The problem out there isn't confined to them alone. Their problems blow easterly. A couple pics I snapped at the Grand Canyon. The guide at this lookout was quick to point out the smog over the canyon is from California.

my partner and i run a kenworth transfer with an 80k gvwr and a mack dump with a 25.9k gvwr for our lanscape supply, and our bit inspector(chp) explained to us that these new diesel smog laws going into effect only affect 26k gvwr and above trucks. only somthing to get your panties in a twist over if your into the bigger mv's 5ton and up. those trucks require the clean air conversion which i and my partner have to do to our kenworth. if we don't were going to be paying some hefty fines each year which make the $10k conversion look cheap. all new diesel vehicles being sold in ca have smog devices. i have a deuce that i'm getting ready to title when i finish hacking off the rear axle as a california non-commercial commercial vehicle(pickup truck in this state). my local dmv informed me that i will not require cdl, ca number or smog devices in order to operate. hope this helps...

That sounds like good news to me... thats what I wanted 2 do...
When you register your bobbed deuce are they going to reissue a weight certificate or are you just going to list it as whatever weight is already on the title... registering a 26k vehicle is going to be expensive in cali....especially if you know you can never use that weight if you bobb it..... However I've learnt not to stir any questions up at DMV or you will pay dearly..lol
