1984 cucv Engine oil type 6.2l diesel

I’d like to know the correct engine oil type. I’d prefer to know what it is or what it’s suppose to be

The military would have used 15w40. I have always used that oil in every diesel I have owned, including CUCVs and HMMWVs with the 6.2L or 6.5L engines.

Yep, the military uses cheap, recycled 15w40. Any store-brand 15w40 will be as good or better than what that truck was fed for most of its life.

Rotella 15-w40 is what you will find at Walmart and just about any parts store. If no turbo I would suggest the T4 non synthetic. If you have a turbo or plan to let it sit for months between uses then the T6 synthetic might be better for your engine.

You can use any brand. I just know Rotella is stocked just about everywhere and is meant for diesels. Whatever you get make sure it says heavy duty diesel oil. That is the important walk away from this thread.

On the bottle, look for the API oil category.

In the past, all oils marketed for diesel engines were C category. Typically, any changes superceded previous categories. Recently a F category has been introduced. This is not backwards compatible with the C. In other words, don't run the 10w30 diesel oil in your 6.2/6.5. Everything else will work just fine.

Recommend also using Wix filters.
Just like Oils, there is a difference in quality among the brands.

I use Mobil 1 Motor Oil 10-40w and Wix filters on everything I own.

Everyone has their own personal preference.

Everybody on here likes to quote technical information. This is from the GM 6.2 manual I have from GM school back in the early 80's.
The GM 6.2 service manual did recommend 10W30 during the winter months. The manual did say to avoid the use of 10W40 engine oil but to retain 15W40/SAE 30 for hot weather use.
I don't know why. I am just copying it from the manual.
I only wanted to put that out there so someone is not misinformed. To each his own. I used 15/50 in a few CUCV's during hard long hauls. My days of hard long hauling in a CUCV are over. I can still hear the Katydids. Have a Great Day. Stay well lubed. I hate a dry crank.

Yup, I also use 10W40, Mobil One. Truck starts nice, even at -10 !

Like I said I am just copying from the manual. Makes no difference to me. Not sure why 10w30, 15w40, and 30w, would be good but they pointed out 10w40 as not good. just pointing it out for debate. Have a Great Day.

If you're going to run a 10w30 oil it needs to be an API C oil, not API F. For example, Chevron Delo 400 SDE is ok. Chevron Delo 400 ZFA is not ok.
