A Navy F/A-18C returns to service with the U.S. Marine Corps to support training and operational missions.
I'm guessing the trucker who pulls into the Truck Stop with a load like that on his or her trailer has automatic bragging rights.
I sure would love to see one of those on the road. :jumpin:

Are there any more of the C-130's still being built anywhere today?

Or is what was built previously all that remains forever of the "fleet"?

We are currently on the C-130 J or H models. Nto sure if they are rebuilds or if they are fresh manufacture.

The C-27, which is a "mini-herc" is new manufacture.

The mini-hercs are all fine and good, but they aren't the old Hercules by a long shot. Those C-130's are a legend.

I guess because I have flown on them that I'll always be a sucker for them somehow.

It was just about the time my enlistment was up that all of our deployments went from military flights on the C-130's to commercial flights as standard. It just wasn't the same by any measure.

The C-130J is a new build aircraft. Up rated engines, 6 blade props, increased cargo capacity, modern avionics. I think they are still built at Lockheed-Martins facility in Georgia. The C-130A models first rolled off the production line in 1954, and the C-130J is still in production today. c3eb7612a5d23119d9d3375191f9d318.jpglockheed-c-130j-hercules-a5jxmd.jpg

I was at the Cebu airport in the Philippines last year, and the Philippine Air force had several C-130s that they were using for spare parts. Good to see them getting some new aircraft. They also had several Iroquois (Huey's) that were being used for parts as well.

WOW !

1954 ~ Present !

62 years and the basic profile is virtually unchanged.

Even the Ford Mustang has gotten numerous reshapings in it's much younger 52-ish years.

Quite a record.

Thanks for sharing.

It really warms my heart to know that C-130's are still coming off the assembly line.

In a world where new-and-improved is the standard, it's impressive to realize that other than a nip-and-tuck here and there (and that I'm guessing, mostly in on-board electronics), that the airframe of the C-130 really can't be improved. It's still in demand and proof positive of a good design well-executed. That's great!

One of three operating WB-57 airplanes in the world took off this morning for a flight to Guam to begin a month of high-altitude research flights over the Pacific Ocean. 12 scientific instruments on the airplane will collect data so scientists can learn more about the OH and sulfur chemistry, cirrus clouds, and dehydration in the tropical upper troposphere and lower stratosphere over the western Pacific.

Ghost Rider returns to active duty at Minot AFB, ND to join the fight after being regenerated from storage and undergoing depot maintenance at Tinker AFB, Okla. B-52H, 61-0007 was placed in storage in 2008 along with 12 other H-model aircraft and is the first to be returned to service.

I was chatting up a pilot for Southwest Airlines over the weekend, and learned two new things about the C-130 I never knew. Before flying for Southwest the guy was a pilot in the Coast Guard:

- A C-130 will fly on a single operating engine. The aircraft has to be empty, and it has to be one of the inboard engines, but it will fly.

- A C-130 can be "jump-started" by pulling another C-130 directly in line ahead of it. The prop wash from the forward ship will drive the props of the after ship and start her right up! The USCG called it a "Buddy Start".

Check it out! A new AMARG exhibit at the Pima Air & Space Museum opened this week in celebration of the Group's 70th Anniversary. Additional information about the museum may be found at www.pimaair.org

With nearly 4,000 aircraft in storage, preservation is the most visible of AMARG's mission elements. As described in the museum's exhibit, a strippable compound, referred to as Spraylat, is applied to the aircraft to protect them from the harsh desert environment.

AMARG's workforce consists primarily of civil service employees with less than 5 active military members.

Hercules to the rescue.

That's part of the appeal of the C-130; it's like you always see one or more in the thick of things wherever help is needed anywhere in the world.

That's a special reputation not many other airframes can claim.
