4 axle 5 ton??

Seen this truck in another thread. My question is how does this work off road or does it.?.

On a standard truck the rear axle are a set and pivot in the center of the two. All that was done on this truck is a 3rd axle was placed behind the set.

Now think about this, going up a hill as the front end comes up:


On the standard 2 axle rear end the 2 axle pivot in the center keeping both axles flat on the ground and the load equal between the two of them.

On the 3 axle set above as the front end goes the 2 axle set starts to pivot as the frame comes up, but then the back of the frame goes down, the 3rd axle starts to take all the load. The 2 axle set start to lift off the ground and the load all put on the 3rd axle.

This would be a great place for one of those great diagrams of "G lube's"

Going up a hill would put a lot of stress on the added axle.

In theory the added axle and it's independant spring set should be put in front of the existing axles. Really though the three axles should all pivot.

I had a triple axle trailer where each axle had their own springs and a pivoting block would allow some movement between the axles. The movement was limited but it did allow the axles to spread the load on normal surfaces.

looks like a grain truck set up. If that is true your not going to be going up and down/up steep approaches.
you guys are correct that the best option is to have the single sprung axle up front.
But for what she is going to be doing it should be fine.
Just take wide turns. :)

True. It looks like it was purpose build for flat fields and probably did very well there.

If you were going the custom route with extra axles they would really need to go on the front of the truck anyways.
