4WD light, wont stay off

just hooked up the 4wd light in the 1008, it has been unhooked since I got it because of a broken clip at the transfercase plug. When you put it in 2wd the light goes out for a few seconds and then comes back on....if you smack it in to 2wd a few times it will go out again, but then comes back on. I didn't search on this, couldn't remember many topics on it since I became a member, and the list of new postings is a little short today. Thanks for any ideas.

28. FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE LIGHT TURNS ON (TRANSFER CASE NOT IN FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE)
Step 1. Turn key to “RUN” position. Disconnect lead from four-wheel drive switch on
transfer case
If four-wheel drive light goes out, replace switch.
If four-wheel drive light stays on, trace circuit. (See wiring diagram F-4 or F-6) Wayne

Turns out the light does not work in 4wd lo, and hi sometimes...will look into a new switch, Thanks
