I am sure there is a simple explanation, but what does 5 ton designate?

Does "5 ton" relate to some measurement of some kind?

Thank You,

Jim Conley

It's the rated cargo capacity off road... Generally speaking, the entire size is referred to by the capacity of the truck although the actual capacities of the cargo, dumps, shop vans, wreckers, etc. may vary a tad bit...

A 2.5 ton cargo is rated to carry 2.5 tons of cargo int he absolute worst off road situation, 5 tons on road.

A 5 ton cargo is rated to carry 5 tons of cargo in the absolute worst off road situation, 10 tons on road.

by worst conditions , that would mean on all side slope and appraoch and decline slopes the vehicle was desined to do.....while loaded.....that is why a deuce is so heabvy duty and only rated for 2 and a half tons, sure it can hold way more, and many are amazed, but it must do it as rated under test conditions...so the general rule as stated in most TM,s is a double load capacity on road conditions.
