Government surplus vehicles do not have titles. They will come with a form to fill out to apply for a title. As for the other questions, you need to contact your local DMV to find out the laws for your state (or do a search online.)

Thanks Johnny. So my question now is if I buy one can I sign the application form for the title and drive it home or is the process for actually getting the title and being legally able to drive it a lengthy one and I'd have to get it low boyed outta there?

Honestly, I'd have it flatbeded. Unless you have some skill with what to look for, the costs of a breakdown in an unknown (to you) vehicle and a tow to a location where you "might" be able to get parts would quickly exceed the cost of having it delivered to your doorstep. You might get lucky and be fine, but if you aren't, things go sideways in a hurry and being unlucky can go very badly. Another option would be to contact members in your area and see if they can help you with recovery. I would also check out the insurance sticky.

It is pretty simple to title here in michigan , take your bill of sale and SF-97 form to the Secetary of State office and about $25 you will get it titled.

I'm an aviation mechanic now working with prototype automotive but my roots stem from gravel trains and heavy maintenance. So I'll take the chance of a breakdown after a good walk around. My insurance lady already said she's insured one of these before and has a plan set up for me if I get one.

I'm also in Livonia, MI. I have an M925A2 and tow bar. PM me, I will give you my cell number before you go. I could tow you back if something happens. I have a couple years of M939 5 ton experience.

Michigan legally allows you the drive back from point of vehicle purchase without plates. On your own if you chose to do it without ins.

You do not need a CDL in MI if this vehicle will be personally owned and utilized, for non-monetary ventures.
