I am working on a project and got a good deal on what appear to be moly rings. While I have put together some gas motors in my past I have always just used iron. Being that I got these from a private seller, I am not sure what to expect as I paid significantly less than what I have seen at the normal suppliers. My main questions here are a) is there such a thing as knockoff piston rings? b) the moly layer has a somewhat rough texture to it, is this something to aid in the initial seating period? c) I have squared one up in a bore and I can see light through he roughness here and there and I would imagine once the roughness wears away the end gap will change. (seems tight for std and the cast 2nd ring in the set is perfect and the gap is will within spec).

I cheaped out on rings trying to save a few bucks as my wallet is looking really pitiful at the moment or I would have ponied up and got them from rockauto. Anyone here that can offer some insight here I would be very thankful!

FWIW, I stuck one in a lightly oiled cylinder and it magically fit better.... pulled it out and discovered the black spackled coating is some sort of oil based protective film. Even the guy I contacted at Federal Mogul did not recognize what it was... all the moly rings I have seen and have seen pictures of are bare.
