I am not sure the tires stuck out before it rolled, TX has such a law but I see them on the road all the time.

EDIT, this truck was wrecked in San Antonio TX, I grew up there and I can tell you of all the places I have ever lived the streets are much "slippery" when wet than any other.
When I was a teen I worked at a gas station on the corner of Blanco Rd and loop 410, when it rained you could put money on there being a wreck when someone coming off of loop 410 and up the exit ramp would just lock up the brakes and collide with traffic stopped at the light at the overpass, I can still remember the sound that would get your head up to watch.
Add that to that the fact this truck had bald tires and they never had a chance...
Yep... that last statement say a lot here. Auction trucks and 15 year old tires... YEP

Here is my thoughts on the subject. When I was looking to buy and finally bought my HMMWV I knew up front it was not as safe as a modern vehicle. That is a given with no air bags, anti-lock brakes, soft top, soft doors etc. Was I concerned? Yes and no.

I grew up riding motorcycles on and off the street, driving farm tractors. My first vehicle at 16 was a 68 Chevy C10 with the same lack of safety features.

With that said is any of that less dangerous than driving a HMMWV? Nope. My point is use your head and operate with more caution than your modern vehicles. I told my wife it is no different than riding a motorcycle. Keep a safe distance, keep a careful eye of your surroundings, know your limits, know your vehicles limits. Keep up on your maintenance, air pressures, brakes, etc that can cause the safety factor to be even worse.

No military vehicle older than 10 years old is as safe as your new F150 Pickup. 99% of the classic cars on the road are not as safe either. Lots of vehicles can fall into that category.

That leaves you with the choice of not owning one, keeping it as a static museum piece or yard art or doing the things mentioned and enjoy your MV. Worth the risk? To some yes and to some no. You will have to decide yourself.

Rarely had I heard about a HMMWV roll over. When one did occur it was typically operator error in high speed or trying to drive over terrain not suitable for the vehicle.

I was assigned to the US Army Safety Center accident investigation team three times; all for tracked vehicle roll over fatalities. Accident investigation is a very thorough process.

I was assigned to the US Army Safety Center accident investigation team three times; all for tracked vehicle roll over fatalities. Accident investigation is a very thorough process.
I would never guess you could roll a tracked vehicle… interesting… driving off of a cliff? I don’t see that happening under normal stuff

One of these went down when my son, a marine, was in California. They were doing night training. I was just sick to my stomach.
I’m so sorry. It truly breaks my heart that we have money to give aliens cell phones and our soldiers die in equipment that we can’t afford to maintain! I don’t have words to describe my anger

1) A M113A3 was driving down a tank trail a a speed to great for conditions (snow & ice) under poor conditions of visibility. The driver drove up an incline on the left at an angle and the vehicle rolled. There were two soldiers in the vehicle; driver & TC. The TC was a E5 who had ducked inside because he could not see. The driver died of severe head injuries.

2) A M2 BFV was driving at night and drive off the edge of a waadi. In retracing they route there was a shadow cast at the beginning of the waadi that looked like a shadow you would see on any road that had a slight depression. The driver was a younger enlisted & the TC was an E4; no NCO on board. The rule was they were to go to ground unless escorted by another vehicle. The TC’s upper torso was out of the TC’s hatch. The M2 went over nose 1st and rolled on to its top crushing the soldiers entire upper torso. As first on the scene (and also assisted with the investigation) neither I nor the medic could revive this young man.

3) M1A2 was coming down an incline at night. The driver thought the TC was talking to him and shouted “LEFT! LEFT! LEFT!”. The driver turned left sharply as the right side of the tank dipped off the shoulder of a tank trail resulting in the tank rolling. A young E2 was standing on a seat with his upper body exposed. The young man’s head was crushed. I personally crawled under this tank while it was suspended in the air by two M88’s to extract his body which his lower extremities were still inside the hatch.

4) M901A2 FIST-V rolled over crushing the drivers head. Driving too fast for weather and on uneven terrain.
