7MC-2A & MC-2A (USAF) Towable Diesel Air Compressors

Picked these up last Friday.
They were almost given away.
Been wanting one of these for a while.
Perfect for Ranch work

Two are 100% complete, minus one bearing cap, and one MC-2A is missing the fuel solenoid and one air dryer plus the reel air hose.
The 7MC-2A will be brought back to life as soon as I find the fluid capacity’s.

The T.O. for the MC-2A is listed on the Data Plate, which helps with finding part numbers.


The middle one had all new filters installed. Every single one.

They've been used but not totally beat up.
I did discover that the middle one has a bad fuel solenoid. I ordered the part today from a Deutz Distributor.
That one part cost more than I paid for all three machines.
oh well.
When you need it, you need it.

The 7MC-2A with the 2 cylinder 2G30 HATZ diesel is putting up a fight. (The other two have the Deutz diesels)

Have fuel up to the injection pump and plenty of fuel is coming out the return line, but almost nothing is coming out of the injection pump.
Fuel solenoid is working and even have a bit of fuel at one injector, but not much and nothing at the other one.
Fuel lines are clear and a new fuel filter was installed and the tank is 3/4 full.

Engine cranks over great, has great oil pressure and even get a bit of smoke out the exhaust, but it doesn't have enough fuel to start.
Hesitant to use ether since the compression is so high on these.
I did use the much less volatile carb cleaner spray and it would run off that.
It's a Stanadyne 120 pump.

Do these fail all at once or do I need to be worried that the cam might be worn down and not working the pump as it should?
Fluids were drained before I bought it and just a hint of water when I removed the drain plug.
New filter was installed and new oil added.
Drained a bit of oil after cranking on it and while some moisture was mixed with oil, there was zero metal particles that I could see.

A new factory injection pump is about $450 I would like to try any suggestions since I'm most likely missing something.
I cannot find a TM or TO for this machine. The other ones I found it no sweat.
The ones online for the engine aren't very helpful and requires a download from a questionable website.

That makes it much harder to find. Will dig around.
I’ve been striking out everywhere.
There is someone on eBay that has a PDF or CD version for $40+.
No clue if it’s a complete version.

I know the manual existed, but cannot locate it.

The listing picture omits the manual number.
I wonder where they found it since I've spent hours looking for it with zero luck.
It is the CD version, and claims to have everything.

If it was the official paper version, I would have bought it.

Will most likely buy it since I do need it.
I will head straight to copy shop and print it out.
Then share it with everyone here.

HATZ diesel still sells all the engine parts.
Davey Compressor is a different story. SOL on parts for that machine.
Very few parts listed on eBay.

I bought all three machines for not much money, so I will invest the $$ to get them running.

I bought the CD
Hopefully it's complete.

The Deutz fuel solenoid for one of the other MC-2As should arrive Monday or Tuesday.
Wix Oil filter and jug of Mobil 1 compressor oil arrives Tuesday.

I have no idea how many of these units were made.

Well the CD with the manuals arrived, both the operators manual and the service/overhaul/parts list, but they cannot be posted here on SS.

They are Restricted because of some Technical Data and haven't been approved for Public Release, so no posting them here.

Too bad, since they are the latest version with all the updates.

MC-2A......Deutz Engine

New Fuel solenoid was installed and fixed the fuel to IP issue.
Injection pump still will not pump fuel to injector.
Discovered the Governor linkage is missing parts or something.
The part attached to the Governor arm is different that what's shown in the schematic. It's just hanging off the arm and not doing anything.
Part # 32, 33 and 34 are not what's installed in the engine.
Also missing the spring #25

Waiting on the local Deutz dealer to send me their schematic to see what I need.
My other MC-2A is missing those parts (and more) as well so I can't use that one as a reference.
Cannot fine any specific pictures on the internet.

Removed the valve cover and all looks good.
No metal flakes, sludge or anything.
Engine cranks fine and no weird noises when cranking. Has great oil pressure also.

Installed a NOS Automatic Air/Water Separator.
Took the original one and installed it on the other machine that was missing one.

Also not getting fuel to IP and injector.
Don't know if the injection pump is bad or the governor linkage is wrong.
Fuel pump seems to be working fine and fuel flows out from the line that feeds the IP and the fuel shutoff solenoid is working properly.

I don't know enough about Diesel injection pumps to know what I'm doing wrong or what the machine needs.


I'm ready to have one running........

This is from the Deutz commercial manual showing the 208 "D" schematic, which matches mine.
The 208 "F" is what the unit is supposed to have.
Engine looks original and does not appear to be a replacement.
Part's are correct.

#9 adjusting screw doesn’t attach to anything on mine.
(Edit: It does. Couldn’t see the fine threads earlier when I posted this and also didn’t know the screw was snapped in half. )

Now I’m even more confused

Issue SOLVED!!

That adjustment screw is broken in half
The threaded part was either taken out or fell out.
Someone had definitely been inside as the cover bolts were finger tight.
I manually adjusted the fuel rack on the pump and she fired right up! I immediately shut it back down
Made a HUGE oil mess, but she runs !!
Cannot see where the broken part went, if it in fact fell out.
Drained oil again and couldn’t find anything on bottom of block

Parts are ordered

I don’t know what else is wrong but she runs and will sort that out after parts arrive.

I ordered the factory Deutz 208F Service/Operation/Parts manuals from Deutz.

I plan on keeping one of these and want to be able to fix it myself.

Very pricey but it will be worth it.

While waiting on DEUTZ engine parts, I turned my attention to the 7MC-2A.
It hasn't been getting fuel to injectors and injection pump wasn't pumping fuel, even though the fuel pump & fuel solenoid are working properly.

Manual isn't really clear (to me) and I just started taking the governor cover off. Was expecting springs or something to pop out.
Once the cover was off, I saw the problem instantly.
The fuel rod was covered in very light rust and wouldn't move. It was stuck in the off position.
Sprayed the fuel rod and area with penetrating oil and used a brass punch and hammer to lightly tap the rod loose.
(Pics show the fuel rod after it was loose and sprayed down with lube)

Wiped up the excess oil and as much of the very light surface rust that I could.
Worked it back and forth until it was moving freely and springing back to it's intended position.
Cold weather Extra Start Fuel button even works now.

Left cover off and already had the fuel lines at the injectors loose.
Cranked the METZ engine and fuel started coming out right away.
Tighten the nuts and cranked engine again.
It fired right up and had great oil pressure and sounded great.
Not bad for an engine with 3218.7 hours

Starting building air pressure right away.
Blew some black smoke for about 10 seconds and then cleared up completely.

Air compressor is working as designed and builds and holds air pressure like its supposed to.
A little blowby from the crankcase but nothing excessive.
Exhaust is now blowing clean.
Fan that cools compressor fluid is working as deigned.
Used a temperature gun and both cylinder head temps are within 10+- degrees of each other.

After running engine for about 15 minutes, a problem has shown up and, by the looks of it, existed before I bought it.
The #1 cylinder pushrod tube is leaking oil at the base. Quite excessive. Much worse that what pic shows.

Nothing else is leaking except this one spot.
I do have to replace two hydraulic hoses that are weeping lightly.
Best part is, the cylinder head has to be removed to get the tube out to replace the orings. Perfect!!
I ordered the factory Metz cylinder head gasket kit and tube orings. I will be replacing both #1 & #2 tube upper and lower orings.
Made a new cover gasket using Fel-Pro material. Removed the old gasket pieces, cleaned area and reinstalled cover.
Oil leakage was same with or without cover installed.

After starting and stopping and restarting engine while warm a few times, I noticed it seemed to be cranking more than it should before starting.
(Air Tank Empty as required per TM before restarting)
I adjusted the valves and that solved the problem.
Starts right and runs better than ever.

At least another week minimum before parts get here for both machines.

It runs and produces air!!
It's worth the time and expense to fix the issue, since this is the one I'm probably keeping.
Not sure about the other two yet.
