I have an 84 m1008, when I am driving it the fuel level is never consistent on the gauge. It is all over the place. Sometimes it will read past full, somewhere in between, or completely empty. I was just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems and knew what it might be, before i start replacing anything?

Have you checked the TM section that covers fuel gauge issues?

I'm not sure if this will help you, but the fuel gauge on my M1009 started acting funny and after a week or so it read past full and never moved. I checked the TM's and disconnected the sending unit pink wire, then the ground strap. I then substituted a used, but working fuel gauge in the instrument cluster. None of the checks exhibited the actions described in the TM's and the other fuel gauge didn't change anything. I was stumped and started looking for a broken wire. I couldn't find a broken wire, but did notice the instrument cluster wire connector must have worked it's way partially loose (I didn't remove the cluster to change the fuel gauge). I seated the connector properly and thankfully the gauge started working. It was odd because the only other thing that wasn't working was the high beam indicator on the instument cluster. It started working again as well. Good luck.

It's on the backside of the instrument cluster. You can reach up under the dash or remove the entire cluster.
