dk8019 what tranny fluid did you use when you flushed the transmission? also did you change the filter in the pan, or just the spin on? I know there are a lot of threads on this just wondering what you did thank you.

On mine I used Mobil Delvac 1, and only replaced the spin on. I did it one spring, and did it again the next spring. I'm relatively confident I've got it all now, or at least enough to matter. On the oil front I order the Delo 100 through O'Reilly's and it was relatively inexpensive.

You also maybe able to use TES 389 rated fluids, and there are some much less costly options out there if you do. One that I've looked at is the Valvoline 773775, its readily available, and relatively inexpensive.

There are a lot of opinions on trans fluid. I talked to a buddy of mine who spent years in the trans business. He suggested I stay with the 15w40 as that was what the trans started life with and it handles the temps better, so I stayed with it. As far as eng and trans temps, I don't trust those gauges and will soon buy mechanical gauges to replace those and my oil pressure one too. Diesel Pro has them for a decent price.

Thanks for the info gunzy, I'm going back and forth on changing oil in tranny. Nice to hear what other people are doing and experiencing.

Hey Bigred350, did your M985 go through a reset/rebuild program in 2001? Also, is it an '87 model year? I would also be interested in the VIN as your rig looks like mine. I am curious as to how close the VINs may be. Here is mine after a WD40 application.

Mine is a 89, to the best of my knowledge it hasn't been rebuilt, odometer shows 39,000 miles and 1,900 hours. But the engine is black, I was told that means it was replaced at some point? All the filters were marked 2013, but that's about all the info I have on it. I can get the vin when I get out of work.
