A Shocking thread, A1 Monroe 65456

They aren't nitrogen filled shocks. I've never seen one fail that wasn't rusted out. And in any case they are all over the place being used on A1P2's manufacturered up through 2021 and will still be used on the A2 wrecker that is staying with the A1P2 LTAS cab layout. So these will be literally everywhere with production dates into the 2040's. They will be available for the price of shipping if the day ever comes that I need some.

I predict they will, in all likelihood, outlast my ownership of them. Either they never fail and I never get around to swapping them or I toss them for some mag ride if I find something surplus that can be adapted for example.

So the other day I bought one Monroe 65456 shock. Took one of my front shocks off of my 2003 truck. The Monroe compressed and rebounded way way easier than my old original shock. I've installed several BRAND NEW (not even old stock - as in manufactured in the last 2-3 years) shocks and compared them to my 2008 units and can discern no difference between them. If you move them slow they move very easy. If you try to move them fast they get so stiff you can't move them at all. They do not rebound on their own - old or new - and are shipped compressed.

These aren't out of production they are just low volume and production runs are done in batches according to military procurement needs. Production runs to make additional units for other markets simply don't exist so there's no opportunity to buy them. They are still making them as they are still used on the rear axles of the A1P2's. The A1P2 rear shock is the same as the FMTV shocks used front and rear till the front coil overs came out so a rear shock from a 2021 A1P2 will fit in any of the shock positions on a 1993 MTV.

So what’s a clear sign the original shock is bad?
what I’m experiencing is when off roading (large rocks, holes, weight shifting side to side) very slowly I experience a lot of body roll and quickly stop the vehicle wait for it to settle down before proceeding. But on the road and I hit a whoop-de-doo it settles down quit quickly.

Pretty much noises or leaking or the bushings are falling out, etc.

If you don't see any oily stains streaking down from the shaft - it's likely just about as good as when it was made......
