Adjusting brake shoes on M923A1

Hi All!
I’ve been plugging away on my recent to me 1986 N923a1 truck. The brakes were in horrible condition. The front axle brakes were not working at all due to a bad LQ2 valve, the rearmost axle had the shoes removed, and the forward rear axle the shoes were so glazed I can’t believe it could stop

So as I am buttoning the front axle and forward rear axle up before I start the rearmost axle I want to adjust the shoes on the front axle and forward rear axle.

I see in the TM it says the clearance on the shoe to the drum should be .020” - .040”
My plan was to shoot for .030” getting right in the middle of the spec clearance

I did all new diaphragms, replaced the bad wedge assemblies, cleaned up the salvageable wedge assemblies, cleaned an re-greased the wedge cup/pawl assemblies so all should work as designed.

My question is since these brakes are designed to auto adjust as the shoes wear do I even need to manually adjust the brakes via the star wheels or could I just start the truck and apply the brakes several times to get the brakes to adjust themselves?

As they are now they’re no too far off the spec clearance. I measured .040” - .045” currently.

I have looked high and low on the web and this forum and can’t find anything about this. Hopefully this hasn’t been discussed 1000 times. My apologies if it has

Bill
