After Market Fuel Tank?

Has anyone run across a fuel tank on/for an M38A1 that has a baffle going passenger side to driver side in it? I was replacing the fuel sending unit (12 volt aftermarket) and it hits this baffle at 1/2 tank level. I looked for tank photos and none seem to show a baffle. And I bent the sending unit arm all up to shorten it, and it only screws on one way, can't turn it to another angle.

Yes, they all should have that baffle. I've refurbished a few of them and it's been in every one. What I have done in the case of the sending unit is to either re-orient the ring (labor intensive) or drill/tap new holes to orient the ring the correct direction.

If you have any questions, give me a shout.

Thanks DeetFreek. That completely clears up my understanding of the issue. Looks like I might be doing some drilling in the near future.

Darn 12 volt crap....

I seem to have fixed it by banging the tank with a “Chevy wrench” (aka mallet). I guess my mod of the floaty arm works but it got stuck between install and filling the tank.

here to old school whack it a couple times.

I have an aftermarket tank that was in my '52A1 and the mounting ring wasn't clocked correct in it and the PO had not only left the filter off the pick up, but took the float arm off the sending unit because it would have been hitting the front of the tank. You can see in the second pic where the sending unit is pointed the wrong direction. It was all bass-ackwards. 1000031543.jpg
