Anybody know the length of the alt. bolt on the pass. side?

I am fixing my right alternator mounting, the long bolt had been broke off in the cylinder head before I got the truck, so I stop cracking the lower bracket.

Does anyone know the length of this bolt? The GM dealer gave me a part #, and said that it would take him a week to get the bolt.

Also the GM dealer doesn't list a part for the spacer, I was able to get one at the local alternator shop. They don't carry the bolts though.

Should I get the bold in Grade 5 or Grade 8?

Always always always grade 8 unless you need it in some type of shearing capacity. IE when you want the bolt to break before something else does, like a tractor / bush hog drive shaft application...

I am wondering, how many of the cucv's have the long bolt broken in the head? Seams like all of the pics I have seen don't have the long bolt and spacer. I have been snapping a damn bracket about every 6 to 8 months, and just now figured out that this is the friggin reason.

The bolt that came from mine is 6 11/16" long, tip to shoulder, and 7 1/16" overall.

*HOWEVER* I am not completely sure this is the bolt that was originally installed. My 1008 kept eating belts, once, sometimes twice a week usually breaking some/all of the belts. After checking and rechecking, it turned out that the alternator was about 1/4 inch behind the crank pulley, towards the cab of the truck, so I had to install spacers on all the mount points of the brackets for that alternator. It's not perfect, but it's close enough.

That 1/4" made this bolt too short, evidently it was only held in by a thread or two, because I couldn't even get it to touch the head. I have it setup now with threaded rod until I get around to replacing the starter with a 12v unit and converting the electrical to 12v. It broke the replacement bolt off in the head.

Thanks i figured it should be around 7 to 71/4" long.

I also have the threaded rod trick in the bracket right now too!!

I am using a piece of 3/4" black pipe as a spacer until I can get my buddy to machine me one out of some harder stock that I have.

I putting the thing back together, I stapped off the grounding stud on the back of the alternator. It cost $25 bucks to have it replcaed at the shop. (worth every penny, as they tested it too!!)

alt 2 passenger bolt

I have been trying to find the bolt for the alternator 2 lower bolt (the long one). It is M10x1.5x170. I think that Fastenal can order one but the longest one I could find anywhere is a 150. I got some threaded rod like everyone else ($8.50) and cut a piece long enough to get a washer, lock washer, and two nuts on.
