I have seen where you put a ball valve there and with just a turn you close off the bell housing.

That's what I did with mine. My bellhousing didn't come with a "spare" plug port. In fact there is no provision at all for one.

I have the extra threaded hole but it had a plug with a Allen socket in it and I don't carry Allen wrenches that size in my deuces toolbox.

You may have more than one of these "hex plugs" (transmission; winch; etc.)
All you need to add to your tool collection is a 9/16" Allen wrench.
