Brakes Went Out

Last week I noticed my rear brakes on my 1028 dragging. Monday of this week I took the drums off and they were scored pretty bad so I took the truck to a shop to look it over and turn the drums. They were able to turn 1 drum but the other was 3/4" out of round so that got replaced.

Yesterday I picked the truck up and even with the new drums, it seemed like the rear wheels were binding a little when braking but only at low speed, say under 7mph when coming to a stop.

However, last night when making a right turn I heard a noise from the rear end and lost all brakes but the drivers side front wheel.

The brake pedal feels solid like normal. There are no visible leaks anywhere. The parking brake still works.

Following the rear brake lines as they come together over the rear differential, what is that thing they attach to? Where the single brake line from the front splits to 2 lines?

Any thoughts on where to start?

If the brakes were dragging badly you could have boiled the fluid out of the wheel cylinders in the rear. If your fluid level is full then there are no leaks. I would take the rear drums off and check to see if everyhting is assembled correctly. Then try bleeding the brakes

I should clarify my original post - the brakes weren't dragging all the time, only when coming to a stop. It was actually locking down the drivers side rear tire. Turning the one drum and replacing the other fixed the tire locking down problem.

Fluid level is full.

If the fluid were to have boiled out of the rear wheel cylinders, would that have any effect on the front brakes? It seems like the front passenger wheel isn't braking either. Basically, when I hit the brakes, the truck swerves to the left and I have to countersteer to keep from switching lanes.

Have you inspected the front brakes ? It sounds like a caliper is hanging up or frozen , look for excessive wear on the inner pad , it ussually points to a bad caliper. Also were the front brakes bled with the rears , there could be air in one of the fronts .

I've not inspected the fronts yet. I'll try and do that later today. I don't believe the brake system was bled at the shop, and I didn't do it when I inspected the drums on Monday.

I know there's some pretty specific procedures for bleeding the brakes on CUCV's so I'll check out TMs before I get into it.

You called it. Hung caliper wore out the rotors and actually broke the rotor in 2 pieces.

Also I figured out that the rear load proportioning valve wasn't set properly after the previous owner put a lift on. After a bunch of searching on here, I reset it and the rear brakes are now working properly.

Today I just picked up 2 new rotors, calipers, pads, and rubber brake lines. I'll have her back on the road in no time. :beer:

Man that's the first rotor I have seen chewed up on the outside , i've seen a bunch ground to the fins with no rotor surface on the inside though. :shock:

Edit ; That picture should be in a sticky for inspections.

Im wondering when the last time they were checked? Holy cow!!! :shock: that rotor is beyond gone!.... i would go ahead and replace both calipers for good measure, to ensure the new rotors dont get chewed up as well...

i can see allowing some things slide, but not when it comes to brakes....

I always ride with the windows down and it never made any noise. Back in college I was riding with a friend in his f150 when he wore through his bake pads. I will never forget that screeching sound. But with this truck, there was no metal on metal to screech.

i can see allowing some things slide, but not when it comes to brakes....
I've only had the truck for 3 months now, and haven't had the front wheels off yet until now.

Rotors, calipers, pads, and the rubber brake lines are going to be replaced on both sides.

That damage had happened alot longer that three months ago.

Glad you found it now and not later while in the backend of another car or in a ditch.

Got the front brakes all replaced and put back together. I'm glad I opted to do the drivers side as well because when I took off the locking hub assembly, there were no signs of grease. Got back into the wheel bearings and there was even less grease there. Cleaned it all out real good and then repacked the bearings.

It took forever to bleed the air out of the brakes. I stumbled on another thread where someone recommended reverse bleeding the MC by taking the cover off and pumping the brakes with the truck off. I pumped it a few times and sure enough the bubbles were flowing out. I kept on pumping until they stopped and then started bleeding the brakes again and that did the trick.

Then I burnished the brakes. 20 stops from 30mph with a 30 second cooling period between stops. It's supposed to help eliminate any squeaks.

Got the flags mounted in the bed and headed to meet up with sailbum. That's his deuce in the last pic.


EDIT TO ADD: I've been informed that my flags are not in the proper display position. They're supposed to be displayed in the front right corner of the vehicle as to take a place of prominence. But when driving, that would completely block my view. So sorry, but that's where they're staying. And based on the amount of salutes and hoorah's I got yesterday, lots of folks around here are ok with that.

Wear on the outside like that is from the caliper slides sticking. Your caliper pistons could have been fine but an often overlooked area is the slides. THEY HAVE TO BE CLEAN!!!! When you are done with your brake job you should be able to move the caliper back and forth in the slide by hand. Both hands on a 60.

Responsible folks always do the brakes 'on the other side'. Especially when one side was so bad. Hope you replaced the calipers and the the flex lines on both sides. Will save you grief later. Looks like you did a good job on the side you photoed.
