Can a "D" Turbo be made to whistle?

My (hopefully) soon to be here Deuce has a "D" turbo. I DO love to hear that turbo whine though. I noticed in Dr. Foster's post on the super turbo upgrade he made that his turbo could be made to whistle by removing the silencer.

Does the original "D" style turbo have a removeable silencer? If so, how is it removed and will removal affect performance, other than letting me hear that great turbo sound?

Thanks, Lee

I'm unsure of what a "D" turbo is, but depending on the year of the engine, some turbos have a diffuser plate in the intake side, held in with a snap ring. It is there for the reason you want it out, to stop the loud whistle.....this is just my knowledge of newer Cummins engines. I don't know if your turbo has this. No it won't hurt the turbo or engine, it will just make the whistle louder. One other thing. If you soon to be deuce has been sitting for an extended period, the turbo might be locked up...straight exhaust pipe, no drain hole at low point. If rain water got in there and sat. there ya go. Take the inlet pipe off and put your finger in the compressor inlet and see if the wheel turns..DO THIS WITH THE ENGINE NOT RUNNING...if it is locked up, use a 1/2 inch deep socket and g.e.n.t.l.y try to turn the wheel. remember, the threads are left hand..lefty tighty...righty loosey.

Silencer rings are pretty much just a Dodge Cummins thing (but not solely). They were installed to lower noise emissions for the EPA.
I'll never forget the day my buddy bought his '01 Dodge, we ripped the silencer ring and air cleaner off in the parking lot before we left and handed them to the salesman. Installed an air cleaner that could breathe and put on a TST fuel box LOL rofl

Not just a Dodge thing...600HP and down engines. The turbo on the deuce I got was stuck...big difference in the smoke and power annd noise w/o it. So far...100 miles later, no problems like oil out the exhaust. X my fingers!
