Charging issue created through ignorance of GEN 2 light

So I feel stupid.
I did the 12v conversion years ago and vaguely remember reading about the need to retain the GEN lights.
fast forward to my latest rebuild where I installed aftermarket gauges in the dash and eliminated the lights.
I've been trying to figure out why my alternator won't excite and refound the info again in my search here.
Now my question, do I have to wire the light back into the circuit or can I duplicate the civilian circuit sensing wire?
Thanks in advance.
