Could I use this kit to recover 5 tons?

I bought 2 of these sets from GL and was planning to sell them, but after looking through everything I may keep one if it can recover a 5 ton.

What parts would I use from this set to recover a 5 ton with another 5 ton? How would I connect to the flat towed 5 ton?

Thanks,

Bill

You could, but I wouldn't. The Army got rid of all of them because they were breaking while towing. Use everything else, but get a steel towbar.
Does anyone know where the bulletin is to show they were breaking and not to use them? I have searched everywhere and I cannot find anything that says the Army got rid of them because they were breaking.

Is it just 5 tons, or would it be OK for towing a smaller vehicle?

Thanks,

Bill

There was a post from someone here a while back that had one brake pulling a 5 ton off a base after a GL purchase. If you are going to pull a 5 ton use a medium or heavy tow bar. The Ibistek is only good for light weight vehicles. I don't even think I would try to pull a HUMMWV with one. Just to much to risk.

The tan ones were junk and totally recalled & suspended use. The black ones replaced them but were then downgraded in weight capacity. I don't think they are currently authorized; That is why they flooded GL the last 2 years. Many of them had a new weight stenciled in white on them and the data plate scratched off.

I personally have my doubts and would not use for more than a cucv or humvee. They just don't look tough enough and with the well documented failures already......

B. MACOM Commanders will also track and report compliance of this message for all subordinate Commands/Activities to: Jaletha Stewart, Equipment Specialist, TACOM-WN, DSN 786-6277, COM 586-574-6277, and Jaletha.Stewart@Us.Army.Mil not later than 30 days from the date of this message.

2. Problem:

A. Reference SOUM 06-028 states IBIS TEK tow bars are unauthorized for use and should be disposed of. This message is to provide updated information and user actions as it pertains to the new IBIS TEK tow bar, PN 2509-400-001 and its use on UPArmored HMMWVs. PM-LTV in conjunction with U.S Army Development Test Command (DTC) and US Army Aberdeen Testing Center (ATC) has completed testing of a new version IBIS TEK tow bar, PN 2509-400-001 on UPArmored HMMWVs. This testing identified several hazards, however, that are noted under User Actions below.

B. This SOUM applies only to the use of the IBIS TEK tow bar PN 2509-400-001. All other IBIS TEK tow bars are unauthorized and should be disposed of. Reference SOUM 06-028.

3. Should Commanders determine the mission requires the use of this product, Part Number 2509-400-001, in lieu of the Army standard tow bar, a Composite Risk Management document should be developed in accordance with FM 5-19. Document the acceptance of the minimum II-C (Hazard Severity: Critical - Hazard Probability: Occasional) as determined by the Program Manager Tactical Vehicle Safety officials.
Recommend Commanders put in place and adhere to the following User Actions in order to mitigate the high risk hazards identified during testing.

User Actions:

A. Unit Commanders should be aware of the following:

1. Use of IBIS TEK tow Bar Part Number # 2509-400-001, Cage Code (1SC69) is only for HMMWV to HMMWV applications.

2. Two people are required to install the IBIS TEK tow bar. The tow bar weighs 60 pounds.

3. When the tow bar is stowed in the front vertical position a positive locking ratchet strap should be used to secure the tow bar verses the nylon straps provided. This is to prevent the tow bar from coming in contact with the ground while in motion.

4. The Operators should wear gloves when removing the rear hitch pin on the rear bumper tow bar holder.

B. Before Operation: Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services.

1. Inspect the Tow Bar Ring Hitch Assembly for wear. Replace with Part Number: 2509-700-001 when ring thickness wears below 1.25". Use a caliper micrometer, outside, NSN: 5210-00-243-2933; which can be found at the field level.
https://aeps2.ria.army.mil/commodity/So ... iteria.pdf.

2. Utilize tow chains instead of the nylon straps.

C. During Operation of Vehicle:

1. Monitor and limit vehicle speeds to 20-mph when towing a HMMWV.

2. Limit vehicle operation on V-ditch type obstacles when towing a like HMMWV.

3. Limit vehicle operation on grades no greater than 20-percent and side slopes no greater than 30-percent when towing a like HMMWV.

4. When towing, stopping distance will be increased.

D. After Operation of Vehicle:

When parking the HMMWV on a grade or a slope, utilize wheel chocks in conjunction with the parking brake.

E. Unit Commanders, contact your local TACOM Logistics Assistance Representative (LAR) or your State Surface Maintenance Manager upon receipt of this message for assistance. For assistance in locating your TACOM LAR, see paragraph 6C.

4. TACOM/PM actions: N/A.

5. Supply Status:

Thanks, I saw that. It's out dated (2006) and talks about the use of the older Ibis tow bars and the continued use of the 11,000lb tow bar; IBIS TEK tow bar PN 2509-400-001.

What I'm asking about using has nothing to do with that memo below. I'm looking for memos that the Army has issued orders to stop using the black colored Ibis Tek 44,000 lb WLL (Medium Tow Bar), NSN 2540-01-577-3693. I have not been able to locate a memo giving orders to stop using the NSN 2540-01-577-3693 tow bar.

I saw the one occurrence of a tow bar snapping. Glad no one got hurt!

Thanks,

Bill

I've helped Jeff Davis use his Ibis Tek 44K tow bar to tow a number of 5-tons off Camp Shelby. With the previous posts of its failure in mind, I inspected the towbar and found no visible signs of metal stress or cracking. I know this is just one data point, which is statistically meaningless.

There are a number of incidences of misapplication of tools, vehicles or procedures causing accidents (jeep rollovers, reverse in low in M939 series trucks, 40mph max speed in all M939 series trucks even with working ABS, etc.) resulting in changes ordered from above in their use. While I am in no way saying that these bars are safe (I just don't know), the possibility exists that many or most of the failures may have been caused by people hooking up the bar incorrectly. There are even instances where the steel tow bar has failed when hooked up incorrectly.

Sorry Juan I have to disagree the NSN 2540-01-577-3693 was not created until Sept of 2009 and is not the light weight one PN 2509-400-001 and is not covered under this order. I believe that the poor wording of this is why many of these newer towbars are being surplused in like new condition I have asked at the base and this nsn doesn't come up with a bad anything. So I don't think it is covered and would like to see an order to the contrary if it exists.
Also the best I can tell all of the newer towbars are black, also why would the military keep buying a towbar they know is bad as the soum was in 2006 and the NSN tow bar in question was not built until after 2009?

NSN 2509-400-001 is a black Ibis Tek towbar, but it is the HMMWV Ibis Tek towbar that replaced the earlier HMMWV tan version (The "Bad" one)

It is a 17500 lbs towbar that does not use towbar feet and directly attaches to the HMMWV front lifting shackles.

Just adding my experience with military towbars...
I use three of the older steel style towbars, I do not have the ident numbers from them but I use the light duty size to pull CUCV's and M880's. I use the medium size for 2 1/2 ton and 5 ton. I have not used the heavy duty size that could pull a tank because It is just too massive, BUT with all towbars turning sharply puts a lot of force on them and can cause them to fail. I have had the steel ones bend from too much side torque and have had them shear off when a semi truck rear ended the truck I was towing. I have had experience with aluminum in various situations and would not use them. Steel bends and can still hold in most circumstances, aluminum simply shears off. It is NOT worth the risk. It is not fun to see your towed truck pass you on the highway. Even steel ones need checking and pieces retired if ovaling of the pin holes are found... Also the one you have is too underrated for towing anything close to a 5 ton.

Castle Bravo and Csm I think are on the right track. Ibis currently makes 2 different black tow bars from what i see on the website:
http://www.ibistek.com/product/detail/tow_bars
Also check out the attached flyer. That was part of my confusion on the bars

I differ to those with more experience.
