Its actually a good idea even with a top. Keeps them from sagging between the bows... On one of our 116's, we have a sheet of plywood running front to rear to support the canvas and keep water/snow from collecting.

I think the original quote was "Better Dead Than Red", referring to one's preference to be 6 feet under rather than a Communist.

However, in our line of work, yes, better red than dead.
