Your best bet is to buy used from a fellow SS member and rebuild them yourself or have them rebuilt.

You can find new ones on epay. OdIron.com has new ones. NAPA sells rebuilt ones but some people report troubles with them.

You will also need belts and mounting bolts/hardware

All of this is covered in the CUCV Wiki at the top of the CUCV Forum

The stuff on epay comes from Rare electrical. They have the isolated ground GEN 2 alts. It looks nice, but I've heard its Chinese made and it only has a 1 year warranty, but I've had no problems with mine in the GEN2 position the last 6 months. They also sell 24V starters (again, probably Chinese made, 1 year warranty) The autozone Caddy alt puts out 100 amps (not the 78 in wiki) and has a lifetime warranty. You can only run it in the GEN1 position, however.

For the primary alternator, I used a alt. from advance auto parts for a 1978 Cadillac with a 425ci engine. It's the same style alt with a tach output but not an isolated ground. It works fine for #1 alt. But cannot be used for #2. I was in a pinch and needed the truck going so I went with that one. Came with a warranty as well so I'm happy.

Make sure you visit the Cucv Wiki - Steel Soldiers::Military Vehicles Supersite (CUCV Wiki) that is at the top of the page on the CUCV Forum. All of the CUCV Technical Manuals are listed and many other helpful bits of information.

You need to download the repair manuals. You can get then for free. A couple of our members have posted them on their websites.

www.jatonkam35s.com
www.liberatedmanuals.com

The wiring diagrams are in the appendix of the -20 and -34 manuals.
Also checkout the CUCV stickys. It is where we try to post helpful tips and tricks.

Almost every question you will have has been asked and answered many times. The advanced search will become your best friend. Please don't hesitate to ask something that you can't find.

Read the TM 9-2320-289-10 Operators Manual to find out how a stock system should work. It is simular to the Operators Manual for Civilian vehicles. It tells you where all the lighs, switches, etc are located and what they do.

Three of the most important tools you can buy are:

Digital Voltmeter and know how to use it - ~$10 and up
12v Battery Charger - ~$50 for a decent one
Battery Load Tester - ~$30 for an okay one at Harbor Freight

Picked up the rebuilt alt. About $58. And there was no doubt in my mind the guy knew what he was doing. I'm pretty happy. He also showed me something interesting. He put the alt on a tester and it was cranking out about 14.48 volts at a few hundred RPM's WITHOUT the exciter wire circuit and plug being hooked up ???? I always thought that the alt needed the plug and whole exciter wire circuit to put out voltage?
