cucv leaf springs

i was wondering if a cucv m1008 has more leafs in there leaf spring pack than the civilian k30 what gives the cucv a 1 1/4 ton rating over te k30 1 ton rating??

It's pretty simple really. The Army was just VERY literal when they gave these trucks a weight rating.

1 ton = 2000 pounds
Then they allowed 500 pounds for gear and the driver/co-driver

That gives you 2500 pounds, or 1.25 tons of payload capacity.


At least, I'm pretty sure that's what I've been told. However, I think the GVW is 8800 pounds and the trucks weigh 6000 pounds (according to the data plate) which is a difference of 2800 pounds. So I'm not 100% positive. I do know that my truck weighed less than 6000 pounds even after I lifted it and added these quite hefty 11.00R-16 XZLs.

Civilian K30 diesel has the same # of leaves as the M1008 and is actually rated at 9000 gvw (I have one and checked)

The civilian K/V30 single rear wheel pickups have been rated from 8600 in 1977 up to 9200 gvw in 1987.

This pic is of the rear springs on my current 1988 V30 dually pickup.

Are those factory helper springs or aftermarket? I just bought a K30 that has 4 helper springs, but the leaf pack looks highly "rigged" as the bottom overload, as well as the 4 helpers, have all been crudely cut to length with an oxy/ace torch. I'm trying to rebuild the spring pack with another K30's, but want to make sure 1 helper is all that's really supposed to be there. I've never seen multiple factory helper springs before, and as far as I can tell, the helper spring stops are in the same location as my other K30 which only has 1 helper spring.

The springs pictured were upgrades.
The common replacement for the single leaf helper's were either 5 or 6 leaf. The 5 leaf were a bit stiffer.
I used to get this done the first week after delivery of all my 1 tons going back to my 1969 Longhorn Chevy.
In the second pic the yellow 77 has the 6 leaf pack while my 79 and 80 has the 5 leaf.
The earlier pic was of my 88 V30.
These were "off the shelf" spring packs for GM trucks. Sometimes referred to as "Commercial duty" package.
