Cutting off the tandems

Thanks guys. Lots of good advice to try today.

Yes Im right handed and my left hand has paid the price for it. Actually I think the elbow injury is from the misses. The instant you miss your reaction is to try to stop the bfh before you hit your hand and thats where the torn muscle happens.

I already have the 12 ton jackstands and cribbing on the ground set up in front of the tandems.

I'll post up later this afternoon if I gain any ground today.

I am sure glad you did not post you had your frame getting lifted from the "ole oak tree in the back yard".

Just something for you to laugh about while you swing away - there are mechanics that have never learned to get out from under the tree and come into the front yard.

Good luck today and get some pictures posts - just flash away in between swings. We love pictures.

Success!! I went ahead and ground off all the rivet heads with the flap wheel. ( I'm new to the torch and didnt want to screw anything up) I used an axe to start peeling the plate away from the frame and then used a combo of the axe and chisles to pry the plate off the frame. On one side I drilled out the centers and it pryed off pretty easily so on the other side I decided not to drill them and see what happens. It took a little more pounding but it pryed off relatively easy. One word of caution for anyone using chisles, hold onto them because when they decided to bounce out the come out pretty fast. One had atleast 4 seconds of air time before it hit the ground. Thought for sure the wifes Liberty was going to lose the windshield, but it missed everything all together. Once I had the sides pryed away I decide to take a break and remove the drive shafts, that was more work than hammering on the side plates. I could not get the bolts holding the yolk to the pinion so I removed the u-joint instead. Are the plates bolted to the yolk suposed to be atached to the bearing cap? Had a **** of a time getting that joint out but whats done is done. I used the bottle jack between the bogey axle and the cross member and those rivets would not let go so I got out the torch and blew the centers out and then the jack popped the bogey loose in no time.

Thanks for the advice now lets see if I can get the tandem set-up all tore apart and get the axle out of it.

NICE! I think when Stretch and I pulled the axles from the trunnion, we loosened the nuts on the dog bone, then wedged a 2x4 against the nut, and jammed a wood splitting maul in there. Smack the maul and it will pop the dog bone loose, then take the nut the rest of the way off.

Just in case anyone has parts trucks Im still in need of one axle plate (?) the wedge shaped piece that goes between the front springs and axle. I found one in a salvage yard laying on the ground but couldnt find the other one. I also need four u-bolts and nuts.

Edit: I dont want to turn this into a want ad thread so if anyone wants to let me know where to get these parts just send me a pm, no need to reply here.

To all Bobbers:
I know both rear axles are the same. When there in the tandem configuration dose one axle take more abuse than the other? Anybody have any experience or thoughts which axle is better?

Well I know on my truck the rear-rear axle has alot of play in the pinion and the u-joint at the rear end of the driveshaft connecting the 2 is shot. I plan on opening it up after I get the truck back together. Im gonna use the front-rear axle for my bobber.

Just look at it this way, whichever one you use you'll have a spare for parts. :wink:
