Cutting and glueing progressively smaller rings of plywood can work too. The piece could be finished in a wood turning lathe.

The only problem with wooden ones is getting a piece of wood that will not split or check. The labor is not too bad, I make wooden objects on my metal lathe all the time. Metal lathes allow more precision than is normally encountered on wood lathes. All you need to do is grind your tool bits to the proper angles.
