Deuce coolant leak

One of the trucks I just picked up from Frankfort as a pretty steady coolant leak dripping off of the back of the engine. I tried to follow it upwards but can see up far enough to see exactly where it is coming from and cannot see it from the top. It is running down the right side of the engine and I can chase it up as far as the exhaust manifold. I am guessing it is a leaking head gasket , but was wondering what else is towards the back and high that can leak? Besides a cracked head?

There are 2 short (like 3 inches long) coolant hoses that are located ABOVE the manifolds that hardly EVER get changed. They are circled in red. The green circles are gaskets that you will need to change when you change the hoses. There are 6 of them needed.

That was my thought as well, having just done that. It is a pain, I could not figure out how to do it without removing the intake manifold or the water distribution manifolds to the head. The water manifolds (which I ended up choosing) also have gaskets between them and the head, on the top of the head just about above the exhaust manifold ports.

While your doing it,change the oil cooler's coolant hose too. Those 3 hoses are THE most neglected to be changed, EVER hoses on the deuce because they are a PITA to get to and do.

old hoses

I did all of mine. The bottom started to leak, and I accidentally pushed a nutdriver through it when I tried to tighten the clamps ! Pulled it off and found it had the same 1988 date code as the engine. As did the 2 oil cooler hoses, the thermostat housing to water pump hose, the short hoses from the manifold, and the three belts! (couldn't find a date on the upper radiator hose, but it was just as rotten)

I ended up making mine out of gasket sheet - FEL-PRO #3075. Also did the thermostat housing gasket I removed to do the water pump to thermostat hose. Seems to be working fine (~2 months, but only ~300 miles...). Traced around the old gaskets or part, cut them with a really sharp (new) x-acto blade on one of my wife's retired quilting cutting mats. Sharp scissors work ok on the outside edges. Used one of the copper based gasket coatings on them.

What ever the problem was it has stopped leaking....may have just been a shrunk gasket from sitting for so long before I got him. The hoses mentioned look great on this truck. Did not see any dates on them, but they have no dry rot or cracking.

You can pay lots of money for all the short hoses, or go to NAPA and buy 2 foot worth of HD 2" radiator hose take a hacksaw and cut them to length. Worked for me.
