Deuce tire question

I've seen a lot pf pictures of deuces (and five tons) from Viet Nam with highway steer tires on the front instead of NDTs. More on gun trucks, but I suspect that is because I've seen a lot more pictures posted of gun trucks here than "regular" task vehicles. I know why it would make sense today in a lot of civilian vocations, but does anybody know what the reasoning was behind this at that time?

Opcom runs conventional steer tires on his truck if you want some real world feedback.
