Should I hold out for a newer model, or are the 70's good as they get.
The year model of a deuce is honestly irrelevant. Look for the features you want. Check the mechanical condition of the truck. Such as leaks, odd noises, things that don't work. Also, check the cab corners and rocker panels for rust damage.

I would suggest to start review the pretrip inspection procedures that civvy commercial vehicle drivers have to do each day. Yes there will be some differences but the 'meat of it' will be pretty close. Loose wheel nuts, lights that don't work, tread wear, fluid leaks, etc...

Once you do a pretrip a few times it will become second nature.

And of course always ask for help from someone in the biz.
