Did a Steel Soldier Site Search (Gasket + Bridge truck + gas + fuel filter + R6602) but nothing came back :(

Looking for info and telling a story (so I don't forget) about a 5 ton Bridge truck, so I hope this is the correct forum / section.

Decided I should try, yet again, to get Oso's Bridge truck running and parade ready in time for this years Veterans Day Parade, since I have failed miserably since purchasing her.
Way, way back in 2011 Srodocker, his brother & I made a long trip up to Oso, WA after a full day at a car show in Issaquah to look at a bridge truck in the Steel Soldiers classifieds.
XXX on the WET side this past weekend.

Same community that experienced America's deadliest land slide in 2014.

I feel shame for not having done so yet, after all of the great work he already put in the truck.

(After she arived and where she sits now)
(Some day I will start taking time to crop pictures, but that day surely isn't today. Sorry MODS & bandwidth.)

And getting her ready must have been meant to be, even divinely pre-determined, because lo and behold Dr. Evil Porkchop was listing the elusive to me Zenith Carburetors.
My much wanted & needed R6602 upgrade. So I snatched up his last one to be sent on its 2700+ mile trip across these Great United States. 🇺🇲
Again, feeling a bit of shame, because along with the truck Oso provided a cab and crate of new & spare parts that he just was never able to get around to putting on the truck, including carb stuff.

Whilst I wait for the carb, me thought the first thing to tackle should be the fuel system. Wia newish carb and a truck that has been sitting for 10+ years with only a few inches of gas in an 80 gallon tank, time to start draining and cleaning.

In R+Ring the fuel filter I dropped the filter bowl and found rusty gas. Boy that smell brings you back to working on your favorite riggs.
I had not seen it's type of filter element before. a stack of copper shims. It was caked, but not in the modern parlance, rather as being crusty. The voids filled with muck.
So into the ultrasonic in a jar of brake cleaner / acetone, and then with vinegar, and then with water and baking soda.
She & her spring cleaned up quite nice. Had to pry the strainer out of the tank. Banking it on the concrete knocked chunks off

After some prep and paint on the bowl I thought she was ready to reinstall. I figured there would be two rubber oring gaskets stuck to the mounting plate.
But alas that twas not the case. I believe they were in fact cork. And with umpteen years of old gas varnish they had become a permanent part of the housing.
So I removed the base plate from the truck and scraped the old cork material off. Gave it a wisky wheel grinding. then a bath in the utrasonic to get ready for paint and prep.
Mating surface looks good, bit I think the top deserves some sand blasting before paint.

Thus leading to the title of this post.
I am looking for replacement (cork I believe) gaskets.
Since Ms. Oso is such a strange bird, having a R6602 gasser, proper parts & info are a bit more elusive. I haven't searched the number on the last picture yet.
In a pinch I think I can do round buna or viton orings, or x-acto my own cork gaskets (wish I had my cricut from the lab, but not ready to drop the $ on one of my own yet).
Just thought I would do a Steel Soldiers search first.
If no luck here I'll have to start on the big guys like White Owl, Memphis, Erik's or Eastern.

Also I am trying to find a digital copy of the R6602 TM. TM 9-2805-203-34P
It is not in the 5 Ton TM section, but I did find a thread from a year or so back that made it look like someone was working on getting it there.
What other R6602 truck might I add to the search, that use this gas bowl type filter.

Whilst I am involved in those searches I went and found some 3/8-24 hard line.
I can use it to flush the fuel system with acetone and possible make a 5 gallon gas tank for setup and trouble shooting with.

Also I dropped and drained the gas tank. I drained just under 10 gallons of rusty fuel out.
Removed the the gas guage and outlet & vent assemblies.

Searching one of my old alma maters, YU (Utube University) or Why you,, I have landed on the following path to tank cleanliness.
1.) 'Slosh and sit' 5 gallons of fresh gas with a gallon of acetone to get the big tar/varnish clumps off of the bottom of the tank.
Tractor with forks & a 2x4 will be nice to help slosh and set the tank at various angles. Maybe add a chain. Drain & rinse with water.
2.) 'Sit and slosh' 10 gallons of white vinegar - to attack the rust.
4.) Rinse with water & baking soda to neutralize and then rinse again with water.

Are there any secret recipes for a cheap anti-flash rust preventative, or just fill it with gas. I don't know if I am ready to buy 80 gallons on non-ethanol just yet.
What about rolling a couple gallons of diesel then draining? Used motor oil?

And as I sit here, working on this post, my UPS driver has pulled up and brought me my Zenith, safe & sound.

More as things develop...

Is there a spell check tool? I didn't find one on the bar at the top of the composition window.

Sweet,
Thank you Guyfang.
Much appreciated.
This site has so many helpful moderators. :clinto::naner::beer:

Has anyone ever run across a company with a catalog of common gaskets.
Sort of like what McMaster Carr does but with way more gasket products?
It would be nice to be able to put in material/ID/OD and thickness and find a common size that are available.

Re: Installing a AC T-2 Frame Fuel Filter and Upgrade to a Paper Element

The Wix 33042 filter element also fits this application. I had to slightly trim the cover gasket but no big deal. Cross reference charts also show it to be a Fram CG5, Napa FIL3042 and Hastings GF12. The application is shown to be '58-'67 Chevrolet and GMC pickup. They run about $12- $14 at an auto parts store but I've seen these online for 6-8 bucks with free shipping.

Hey it's awesome to find another gasser guy
.. I bought the other 4 zenith carbs and have been fighting getting fuel tank cleaned, patched lines flushed and filter housing cleaned and new paper filter element installed in a M54 cargo, I also have an early M-51 that's on last year's calendar and a M-62 wrecker all with the R6602

You know, quarkz, if you happened to by 2 paper filter elements, it wouldn't be a big stretch to convince yourself that now you need a halftrack in your collection to use that extra filter on so that it doesn't go to waste...just a thought 😉

@Joe Bertram - My similiar battles (6'8" geezer bending under the fender on un-even ground to work on the filter) have paid off, I got the old girl to run today. Pro tip - get a couple threads started on lines & mounting bolts, but leaving it all loose. Then when everything is connected together begin tightening everything up. Those old lines were super stiff. Working on my next post...

@US6x4 - Do you know of one?:driver:

Not wanting to wait on delivery of the paper fuel filters or cork gaskets I made a paper one for the bowl and used a #238 gasket from a harbor freight assortment for the insert. Not a bad R&R.
1758622166678.jpeg 1758628486414.jpeg

Time to start the multi-tasking.
1758621923448.jpeg 1758622109392.jpeg
Get the batteries topped off. Start the fuel tank soaking, 1st a full Water flush - removed big crud. Then a 5 gallon old gas to see what residue would be disolved and sucked up with the water. Drained back into gas can for the next tank. Next is an 1 gallon acetone slosh - disolve varnish & oxidation.
The shaking of the tractor forks made a mini ultrasonic.

1758622915664.png
Had to mow so after draining the acetone I strapped down the tank with 4 gallons of white vinegar in it. Tilting the forks as I drove around made for some great sloshing. 🐦 🐥 = 🥌

1758624453520.png 1758624499180.jpeg 1758623947643.jpeg 1758624006388.jpeg

After mowing back to the fuel system flush. I used a less than a gallon from a year old 5 gallon fuel jug of corn squeezings to flusg the fuel lines, filter/water seperator, fuel pump up to the inlet of the Holley. I put a plastic bottle over the disconnected line and pumped fuel for 4-5 cranks. Each time I got fuel on top with rusty/varnish water below. Water was probably from the old ethanol gas. But it did collect the rust and varnish pretty well. After 4 flushes it was getting dark, so I left it overnight and went to buy 10 gallons of Ethenol Free.

1758625048775.jpeg 1758625678331.png
The next morning, after swaping in the ethanol free gas, and a couple of flushes I have clean fuel at the Holley. I re-connected the fuel line to the carburetor, lubed all of the throttle & pedal linkages and hooked back up the batteries. Checked the oil, which was near full line and smelled a little gassy.
Oil change on the ToDo list. Radiator was 2.5 gallons from full, but no leaks. The power steering reservoir is at the filter screen. With the parking brake on, transmission in neutral, tires blocked, I pushed in the anti-dieseling actuator, flipped the power switch, pressed the starter pedal & turned the key. For trouble shooting Kevin Burke wired a key switch to energize the starter.

After a couple of cranks and she roared to life with a high throttle. I went to push the hand throttle lever in but it seemed to be disconnected.
I reached down and pulled the pedal back up. Pro-Tip after lubing a sticky part, cycle the part a few times to work the lubrication into the part.
After the engine slowed down she was pretty smooth except for a periodic tick. Kevin mentioned a intake manifold crack. Above are the gauges.
While I took pictures and put things away I left the engine running. Oil - ~50psi - Left , Air -~ 40 psi - right. Fuel level sender disconnected. Battery charging in the green.

Back to the fuel tank. I drained and saved the 4 gallons of vinegar. Filled up the tank with water and let it oscillate on the forks while I went out looking for a M35 fue tank to pilfer the level sending unit from.

1758629512735.jpeg 1758629599889.jpeg 1758629451542.jpeg

I came back and drained the tank and then filled 1/2 way with water and a box of baking soda to neutralize the vinegar. While it sat I disassemble the M35 tank. Big chunks inside and the wire holding the float had rusted thru. Oh well, tomorrow I will go look thru the M-series spare parts piles.

Waiting on chemicals to make a better than Evaporust pickling solution I found while surfing YU.
Also need to learn how to YU video clips so I can add links to video captures taken while working on 'Ms Oso'
Another ToDo re-drain the Fuel filter/ water seperator.
