I'm trying to learn what radio equipment would have been in a M1009. I would like to pick the equipment up for my truck. It doesn't need to work, want it more for looks. If someone could give me some model numbers that I can research and learn about. I appreciate any help you can provide.

The top one is a AN/GRC-160 (PRC-77 in a amplifier mount)

Bottom one is an AN/VRC-47 which is a RT524 and an R-442. The RT524 is a radio transmitter (RT) and by itself (installed with antenna) is an AN/VRC-46. Add the Receiver (R) 442 which is a receive only set and you get the VRC-47.

Never saw this kind of set up in a CUCV operationally. Saw it in a M113 but not in a CUCV. Not saying it never was done but (again) I never saw this set up like this before.

Normally the VRC-46 or the VRC-47. That is the RT524 with or without the R442. I've seen GRC-160's on occasions. I've seen the multi-channel push button RT246 with R442 acouple times. I've also seen an RT524 with 2 x R442s on two occasions I can distinctly remember. Even rarer was to see 2 x VRC47's (2 x RT524 and 2 x R442) only once and I think it was with Division Support Command, 8th ID or might have been 3d AD.

By the way the R442 is routinely called an "AUX" for auxillary receiver.

BTW RT524 will run you anywhere from 200 untested/not warrantied to over 600 for a tested/warrantied set.

AUX will be anywhere from 100 to 250.

Installation kit about another 100 up to 300 depending on what you are after.

My bad, the 524 with 2x 442 is the VRC-48. A VRC-49 is 2 x 524s.

As for the question, yes, there should be room for a 524 and 2 x 442s.

There was a 'dog house' that went over the 442 when needed. Not sure about stateside units but in Germany, the KY57 comsec was mounted on the dog house. There was a KY57 for each radio/receiver. Good luck finding one of those much less three of them--even demilled.

Antenna needed?

Last question Carnac,
I have two aerials, a mx607 on one side and a ab-558 with ms-116,117 and 118 sections on the other, do i need another aerial to receive on this extra r442?
Pardon my lack of knowledge i am a combat engineer and did not listen well enough in signals school.

Yes, im studying for my Ham licence, all military comms this side of the pond is encrypted with frequency hopping and comsec (singars) so im not on their channels and they cant hear me.
To be honest i will use it at MV events where the channels will be pre selected and approved by our radio trans regulators of Ireland.
Im still serving also.

Put the MX6707 on your 524 put the aux on the other. You will have 2 cables going to the MX and only 1 to the AUX antenna. The 2 cables for the 524 are the antenna coax cable and the CX4722 I think is the number. They're pretty common so I wouldn't spend much on buying them. Ebay might have some deals but usually folks will ask 20 or 30 bucks for a 5 buck cable.

Hi guys,

I would like to get my hands on an Receiver (R) 442.

Where would be the best place online to look for one at a reasonable price?
It may come in handy some time. At least it would be interesting to listen to.

Just my $0.02 cents...
