024.jpg025.jpg I recently bought a fuel tank for the deuce for my auxiliary tank project. I tore everything apart, cleaned the tank and the fuse housing. Replaced the fuel pump and sending unit and was in the process of reinstalling the fuse housing when I realized I had lost the 3 nuts holding it down. No problem, I'll just go down to the nearest "Tacoma Screw" ( bolt supply house) and buy some. I had the unit as a sample. Turns out the studs are #12 X 28 thread. This is a very "RARE" size. Thankfully the store was able to order them in but I had to buy a pack of a 100ea. So around $50.00 lighter in the wallet I have the 3 nuts I need to install my fuse housing.

Most all the nuts, bolts & screws on the military stuff is fine threaded. It's only a pain if you don't have access to replacements should you misplace the originals like rustystud did.

I think you need to go back in there and punch someone in the face. Fastenal has it on the website for 14 pennies each. So for $14 you could have had 100. I'm not kidding or trying to insult you at all. Go back and get your money!!! That is the height of a rip off.

I'd find another bolt supply. Tractor Supply sells by the pound, but this particular metric size may have been in a baggy pack of 4 maybe. Not sure what other supply houses are near you, but I'd sure look around for more. Ouch!

According to my local Fastenal they went to a minimum purchase of 25 bolts or nuts about 4 years ago.

Same in Louisville, Fastenal doesn't stock much fine thread, however they can order it. So far they have sourced all hardware needs for my trucks, some with minimum quantities, prices very reasonable.

#12 thread is indeed a less common UNF thread. It is so close in size to 1/4-28, that most design engineers just specify the slightly larger 1/4 inch thread.

The #12 fine bolt is usually a 24 thread not a 28 thread. So this is an "extra" fine thread. As far as a deal goes, I had to pay full retail since this was a non-stock item. I mean they don't stock "ANY" #12 X 28 bolts or nuts. Tacoma Screw is a major supplier of bolts here. Even bigger then the "Fastenal" store. Remember I live in the land of "Boeing" planes and other major manufacturers . You can get almost anything in this city. So when they say it's a rare item, I believe them.

The way I look at it, my entire life when I hear someone say they paid X for something someone else chimes in and says they could get it cheaper somewhere else.

It happens, you needed them to get the truck fixed.

True story. When you need it you need it. It would be nice to have ready access or storage for tons of various hardware but reality has a way of trimming back your options. Storage costs, searching, returning, taking back getting refunds costs. I say try to put it behind you and not beat yourself up too much.
