Depends on your infrastructure. Overhead crane/gantry? Knuckleboom? Tractor with forks or bucket (they suck)? Engine only or engine and transmission?

The TM has the play by play what needs to get done. Mainly...

Drain coolant, pull radiator, unhook fuel lines, unhook air line, unhook wires, remove engine mount bolts, remove winch drive shaft if equipped.
Hook up straps or chains, preferably with a leveling bar to prevent bending the crap out of the lifting eyes and denting the rocker covers.

Take the load on the lifting device, when front of engine is light, remove both front engine mounts and the "tray" for the rad...much more space to play that way.

Prepare a landing zone for the engine. A couple of 6x6 work to prop the oil pan up. Its asymmetrical so the engine will try to fall over. Some use a couple used tires.

Move engine forward and up and out.

If you have done it before, couple hours by yourself. If it's the first time, 3 hours or so...you want to go slow, check clearances, don't rip stuff apart you forgot to disconnect.

I strongly advise to have a soldier B for the lifting part.

i did one in teh field a couple years ago i swapped the engine with a hole in the block for one that had been used in something else i spent an 8 hour day doing the swap. i had access to an excavator and a transmission jack so i could leave the trans under the truck.

I missed the "install" part of your question. I maintain that it takes 3-4h to pull the engine and as long or longer to install. I'm totally with snowtrac on that one.
