fuel filter question

I changed all my fuel filters tonight with Baldwin filters. The secondary filters did not come with the gaskets needed for the top 5/8 bolts that hold the canister to the plate. Has anyone used an o-ring with good results. I installed mine with a o-ring and so far so good but that was with it just sitting there idling.

The truck has never started and idled this easy since changing them and cleaning all the gunk out of the canisters. I also cleaned the tank so should be pretty good to go now. I plan on eventually going with the spin on filter kits when the funds allow.

Thanks for any help.

Just my 2cents but I would get the correct gasket. Sometimes "o" rings don't take kindly to being compressed tightly without being supported around their outer diameter. They can split when compressed.

I may be wrong but as to the idling issue did you bleed the air if any?
Just a thought also when your motor not running turn on your aux power do you hear the fuel pump running if not you most likley have a bad fuse for the fuel pump it is in the little box at the top of your tank.
Good luck Jerry

Jerry,

you must have misunderstood my post. The trucks idles better then it ever has and starts easier. No problems yet.

Bob,
I think my O-ring should be good to go because there is a recessed area in the filter housing where the 5/8 bolts tighten up against. I believe the original style gasket was probably a type of square O-ring if that makes sense. I will try to take it for a little spin in the next few days to check it out.

If my O-rings do not hold up is there anyplace to buy just that gasket?

Thanks for the replies

I didn't remember the recess. Been a couple months sense I replaced mine. A good place to try for odd seals / gaskets would be at Messicks John Deere over in Harrington. They work on all kind of equipment from all years.

I do not need to bleed the air from my system after a filter change, turn the power on, let the in tank pump fill the system, it will remove the air back to the tank.2cents

That is basically the same thing I did Kipman. I did unscrew the bleeder valve on the top of the secondary plate until I seen fuel.

did you use the 10 micron or 6 micron filters? i just changed the secondary ones in mine the other day and used the 6. I talked to a good friend of mine who is a pro with diesels and went to a diesel school and he said he was nervous about having a 6 micron thinking it may be too constrictive. he said he would feel better with a 10 micron filter so it allows more fuel to get to the IP (flow). I had the 6 microns on hand, so i just put those in for now. It still runs good. I changed my primary and put in the Napa 3113, 10 micron filter and it ran great that day and seemed to run the best it ever has. Now it dosnt seem to run as good as it did that day (it was really hot out that weekend), so im thinking that 10 micron primary might be clogged up a little. the tank is real clean inside, nice shiny bottom and everything. I do see some floting flaky looking stuff when i fuel up though. I was told it could be sulfur build up from all the years it ran and sat with higher sulfer fuel and now that i am using power service to everytank, it could be loosening that stuff up and i beleive thats what it is and could be clogging my primary. What do you guys think? throw in another primary filter and see what happens is what im thinking. :-D

sooo....did i just answer my own question? maybe ill just go back to work...haha!

The top bolt gasket is the only one that I couldn't find with baldwin otherwise it would be in the kits. If anybody does find a baldwin part number for one that works, let me know and I will put it in the kit. I typically just flip the crush washer, or replace it with some I have on hand here at home. As far as the micron ratings go, i'm going to contact the factory to try and get the exact micron rating. All I know is that they work just fine and these baldwin filters are the exact same ones that the SDNG used in our deuces. I'm a full time mechanic for the SD guard and we have never had any issues with them.

I am in the process of replacing mine and my 5/8 bolts had rubber or neoprene gaskets in them. Not at all like the standard gasket material gaskets that came with my filters. So I think I still have the top gaskets that came with the kits and you're welcome to them if you want to pm your address to me.

BUT, while we're talking about fuel filter gaskets, my new filters came with the housing gaskets that won't begin to fit in the housing.

The old gaskets were totally shot and now I can't put my cans back on until I find proper sized gaskets.

Any advice? Searching for "fuel filter gaskets" doesn't get me any hits in the forums!
