Has anyone used kerosene in any of their units I was just wondering if it burns more efficiently then diesel ?

Kerosene has less BTU's than diesel, you'll end up burring more kerosene compared to diesel. [FONT=Verdana, geneva, lucida, lucida grande, arial, helvetica, sans-serif]Kerosene isn't as good at lubricating, so it might be a bit hard on the fuel pump and the injectors. A additive would be recommend. The set does specify that it can burn JP-8 its similar to Jet A-1, JP-8 has the additives anti-icing and a corrosion inhibitor. Jet-A1 is close kerosene and Diesel #1. So it would probably burn just fine. Personally I would only burn it if I had no other choice, I would be sure to add a lubricant additive to it. [/FONT]

I haven't tried running kerosene in my 802 or 803's yet, but I've got a few gallons in storage in case we get a really cold winter (it'll flow to roughly -40°). The machines are rated to burn JP-8, which is a kerosene based jet fuel. I've read that kerosene has slightly less energy per gallon than diesel, roughly 3%-5% less. It also is "drier", so you may want to add a lubricant. I've heard of folks that mix 1 quart of 2-cycle engine oil or automatic transmission fluid per 10 gallons of kerosene.

One of the reasons that CECOM tells folks down range, (I have seen documents to back this statement up) to dump a qt of oil into the gen set every second tank full, is because of JP8, is a kerosene based fuel. The gen set, (and truck) engines were wearing out at a faster rate. Fuel pumps, injectors and the like, need a little lubricant. Kerosene, or for that matter, JP8, would not be my fuel of choise. The milatary went to JP8 because they needed(wanted) just one fuel. Aircraft and tanks eat JP8 just fine. Aircraft and tanks eat up the lions share of fuel for the army. If it's all you got, add some oil to it, but I would tell you to stick to normal diesel.

My unit was stenciled JP fuel only. Would that be an indication it only had JP fuel run in it or not necessarily?

The DoD only really runs JP fuels (JP -4/-5 /-6) when deployed, to keep the supply chain simplified (one fuel for everything in the inventory) hence the requirement. It's stenciled to prevent somebody from dumping mogas (gasoline) into the unit.

Jet-A and kerosene are the same product jet-a has a few more tests to meet such as flash point and water content. Both in the raw form are better for your gen set than ulsd ultra low sulfur diesel. in the raw form the ulsd has additives added to it at the bulk plant to meet the required lubricity. here in the arctic jet -a was the winter fuel before the ulsd requirement came about. really because of loss of efficiency I would want to run it in the summer, there is less btu's per gallon and it usually cost's more.

With this style of pop off injector/fuel pump running some 2 stroke oil even in diesel wouldnt be a bad idea. 803/2, 003/2 generators that is.

I pour the specified amount of Stanadyne lubricity formula in at every delivery. It isn't much. One bottle does both of my 55 gallon drums. I also add the specified amount of Killum biocide. Last winter I threw in some anti gel additive for good measure.

Its not needed in Miami, but it never hurts to have 5 gal of kerosene on hand in the colder states, to mix with diesel in the real cold months as needed.
