Generator only puts out 24.5 volts

I've tried adjusting the generator (60 amp DC reversable Mil-G-46785E(AT)
ord #10929?68 with no luck. It just stays at 24.5 volts. I went through the TM and the adjustment procedure no luck so it looks like according to the TM a replacement .

Its a 1971 AMG M35A2 LDT 465 Whistler so who's the best to get a new Gen from ?

We have a guy in town that rebuilt my starter in my old dodge. I might take it to him. It took him a month to get it done though.

Just out of curiousity, what is it suppossed to put out?
I would think 24.5vdc would do fine if you had new and fully charged batteries.

Is the 24V on the vehicle? If so, you are likely reading the batt voltage and the generator is not putting out a dime. I agree it's likely your regulator. The regulators are all over the place.

I measured the voltage at the generator. The in dash guage also confirms low voltage. My regulator will hopefully make it here by the end of the week. I hope its not a hard install. I also hope that I don't have to pull the generator.

The regulator can be changed with the gen in the vehicle. Just pay attention where each numbered wire goes. That being said, removing the unit from the vehicle will aid you in further diagnosing other issues if they exsist (cooked bearing, etc.). It will also allow you to bench test the unit and measure amperage draw. I can understand wy you don't want to remove it. It's dang heavy...

My point in the prior post is if you have the batteries hooked up, that is the minimum voltage you will read (anywhere in the system) even if the gen is putting out zero volts.

The book for my A3 says to adjust the regulator output voltage to 28.0 volts +/- 0.2v. If the truck alt is working, the voltage with engine off should be 24 to 26 v and when the engine is running and headlights on, per the TM, the voltage should rise to 28v. If it is still the same or less as the battery voltage with the engine is off, especially with the headlights on, the alternator or regulator is inoperative.

finally had someone to help me hold meter and adjust screw on generator itself ran it up to 28volts and everything is fine now except turn signals and i think that is a separate problem

Replaced the generator and no issues the last year. I took the old one and replaced the internal regulator and it still didn't work. My guess is something is wrong with the windings or the armature.
