If you are working on a military m1009 truck, you have alternators.

on a stock truck there are two 12v alternators. GM wired them in such away that it is a 12v/24v hybrid system.

GEN1 is on the drivers side and charges the front battery. Then is no relay on this alternator.

GEN2 is on the passenger side and is wired in such a way that it outputs 12v but combines with the output of GEN1 to have a total output of 24v. Depending on the charge status of the batteries it will either only charge the rear battery or under ideal conditions it will charge both batteries.

GEN2 does have a relay. It is under the dash in the center. Stock it is mounted along with the starter relay and the voleter relay.

Read the stickies in the CUCV forum. It addresses many of your questions.

What are you having issues with?
