Wasn't sure at first where to park this post (Armor? GermanWWII?). And only found one other post for "Kubelwagen".

Found all this when looking into the Fielseler Storch flown by Rommel.

Never heard anything about these myself until then:

During his North Africa operations, Generalfeldmarschal Rommel's 'Special' workshop produced a number of unconventional vehicles for strategic proposes.

One of these was the Kubelwagen, camouflaged as a light tank.

The Kubelwagen's shape was perfect to be "transformed" into a light tank , thanks to a light wooden cage covered by a sheet:

· Also a piece of timber to appear as a 2cm cannon
· A board was dragged behind the Kubelwagen to create a dust cloud, like that from a tank's tracks.

All these features helped a simple Kubelwagen appear from a distance to be a PzII.

You bet, Operation Fortitude. Done some reading about that.

Interested to see this just now though in the Wikipedia summary about it; who knew?

To facilitate this deception, additional buildings were constructed; dummy aircraft and landing craft were placed around possible embarkation points. Patton paid many of these a visit along with a photographer. Contrary to popular belief, there was no use of other dummy vehicles, such as inflatable tanks. In large part due to Strangeways refusal to implement widespread physical deception.[SUP][12][/SUP][SUP][22][/SUP] It is thought that the Army encouraged the idea that these dummies were used to draw attention away from some of the other means of deception, such as turned agents.[SUP][22][/SUP] In any case, the Allies overrated German abilities to conduct aerial surveillance and so many of the props were never constructed. Those that were mocked up, Patton was photographed visiting on regular occasions.
