Ha! ... thats not true. How do you think the rods break after a new pump install?
I mean I KNOW it is on the pump rod, I've changed a lot of identical mechanicals back in the day, never broke the rod, had one on an SBC that the idiot that owned it used the bolt method and tightened it til it bent the rod... that was fun getting out. But never had one break. the rods must suck if the sheetmetal pump arm breaks them.

The rods are very hard and brittle, they do not bend they break, and yes the pump can break it.
