CAUSTIC,

When I tried to get a temp tag to drive from Vandenburg AFB back to AZ, they told me I needed a class A to drive a 3 axle vehicle. The weight didnt even matter. Because it was under 26K it was fine, then I was stupid and mentioned the 3 axles. Well thats when all hell broke loose and I was told it cannot under any circumstances be moved by anyone except a class A holder. I verified this with my sister-in-law who has worked in SAC DMV for 13 years and is a CDL specialist (gives road tests on semi's). She confirmed it, with the deuce, its supposed to be class A only.

Just my experience and <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_2cents.gif" alt="My 2 Cents">

Sorry, but the Historic Plates do not have any loophole (other than not being required to stop at the scales.)It's all written in plain English for all to read www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/comlhdbk/comlhdbk.pdfPage 2 of the motor vehicle handbook clearly states that a Class C (everyday joe type of license) entitles you to drive a 2 axle vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,000 lbs, a 3 axle vehicle of less than 6,000 lbs GVW. This clearly leaves the deuce out since the GVW is much higher than 6,000 lbs.
Throw a trailer of 10,001 GVW behind her and now you need a Class A license. There's no getting around that one as that is a federal requirement.
On another note, California has commercial and non-commercial A & B licenses, as firefighters and RVers are required to have them as well.
I'm sure officer Thompson would not have a problem explaining any of this as he has done for many others at the next MVCC event.

One other thing, you might also want to check the CA DMV site and go through the motor vehicle code under citations for driving out of classification. They don't simply give you a ticket. They park your truck until someone who has proper classification can come pick it up. Not trying to start anything just trying to save you all some trouble.

When I submitted a bunch of GL's Form 97's and Assignment papers to Trenton (NJ) for titles, they rejected same and sent everything back. The Form 97, in NJ, has to be made out to me, not GL. I feel that Trenton DMV is wrong. Since GL bought the trucks from the government, they have to be in GL's name. The Letters of Assignment should have covered transfer of ownership to me. It doesn't matter to me anymore, I quit doing business with GL.

is that a CA requirement only? I contacted our DMV CDL office and asked since the GVW is under 26k if I could tow a trailer under 10k GVW without the combo requirement and they said yes, since that would be the same as a RV type trailer, as long as it wasn't commercial?

I live in Petaluma CA and registered my '71 Kaiser M35A2 in Ukiah CA (where I keep it) as a Historic Vehicle. No problems, in and out in 30 min.. They verified VIN. They said I did not need Class B licence because of Historic plates.
