i have about 20 gallons of clean diesel in the tank. Where i live is mostly flat but some small hills. Nothing major at all. It fired right up cold and wasnt hunting this morning. Other than the intermittent bogging it seemed to run good.

That is not what I had expected, I was thinking real smashed. I don't think that would affect anything.
It is funny, Your truck is so big that tank looks like it would only hold ten gallons.

So now it starts cold but wont run. I wonder if you could remote mount a fuel gauge from the top of the filters into the cab. You could watch fuel pressure as you are driving and see if there are any drops when it starts to bog.

great idea, i could install it right at the bleeder screw. it would be interesting to see. It is a riot how big it is. people around here have straight fear in their eyes as they are in the on coming lane.

That's just them seeing that power steering setup. (OK, cheap shot, I apologize.) :)

BAZINGGGGGGGGGG that was funny (except the pistons are behind the axle so they couldnt see them) but funny none the less. :p
:) I was wondering, if your timing was off, it would be off whether the motor was cold or warm. Since it starts cold and mostly ran ok (except for the hunting and stalling) would that not indicate the timing was OK?

Can these motors be off just one tooth and still run? I guess that is the real question.

Wow, long thread I would start at the tank and work towards the injectors. Simple checks and maintenance could fix a combination of problems. There should be no reason to use starting fluid.

1. Pull the pump make sure the screen is clean, hose is in good condition, and the bottom has not fallen off.
2. Replace the fuel filters and clean the canisters.
3. Replace all the plastic fuel lines (air entering system will cause hard start)
4. Hydrualic head (which you have done)
5. Pull the injectors and have them rebuilt

Plastic fuel lines and fittings are cheap. Also, if the hose is rotted on the fuel pump it can stall the truck.

I think that trucks last owner did more offloading than maintenance.

What about Plym49's question in #190? Can they be one tooth off and still run? I took mine to a shop and had the IP done. It seems to start okay, but it blows a lot of black smoke and is getting about 3 MPG, so I am wondering if the timing is off a bit.

Think this was state earlier in the thread, but if it starts with starting fluid, you have a fuel problem, if it doesn't start with starting fluid, you have other problems.

Heavysteven, everything you stated makes perfect sense.
Today i pulled the fuel pump and i saw a few things that were most likely the cause. First i would say i didn't have enough fuel in it... DUH??? I originally put 15 gal in but i only drained 10 out today. so since the fuel was so low the sucking air is most likely the culprit. It also looks the dent underneath jerked the pump so it wasn't sitting flat and the dent was making the depth of the tank in that area even more shallow. The screens were disgusting on the pump.

The hose on the pump looks quite new and in great condition. The rust and sediment in the tank looks horrible. I have come this far so i am pulling the tank off tomorrow and will try to pressure wash the **** out of it this week. i should be able to get 2 of the 3 chambers pretty easy. I may even make a access hole in the top of the 3rd section to aid in this. My local radiator shop was vauge about prices, between $150 and $300. I may as well do it my self.

I am open to any ideas about cleaning the tank.

I am not prepared to say this is the last fix but i am sure this eliminated a few issues.
