How bad would it be?

I don't think it would come out too bad to roll it. It would be money well spent (under $100) for a Wagner airless paint gun. Used it to paint one of the deuces and it came out really nice and doesn't take long at all. Had the whole truck painted in a little over an hour.

I can't count the trucks I've bought from Uncle Sam that were brushed. After 7 or 10.feet, no one will know.

My M35 was clearly painted with a brush in the military. When I painted my deuce, I rolled the paint on with a roller in the large areas and used a $100 wagner paint sprayer for the corners and tight areas. You can see the roller in the picture. It came out great in my opinion. Not museum quality, but absolutely parade ready.

WB,

Have you checked this thread out?

It seems many members are happy with roller/brush results, myself included (only back bumper though, found out about behr paint after rattle canning my '09).

However, I do plan on purchasing a cheap sprayer before next painting season opens and doing again.

Rock on!!

I wish I had a better close up picture before I painted it, but on the door, you could see the brush strokes in the black paint. In the zoomed in picture you can see the difference in surface height where the green meets the black. I bought this truck directly from auction.

Although most of the stuff at Harbor Freight is crap, I have to say, their cheapy HVLP guns are awesome. I've painted all sorts of stuff with them, including a 3-stage pearl (base, clear, pearl) on a friends car who was in an accident and couldn't afford the $1500 the shop wanted to do the repair.

They occassionally go on sale for $9.99.

Before you brush something, I would recommend buying one of their guns and practice on something. I think you'd be much happier.

This is the gun: http://www.harborfreight.com/20-oz-high-volume-low-pressure-gravity-feed-spray-gun-47016.html

I've shot enamel, lacquer, real CARC, thick fake CARC Gillespie, primer, you name it. Technically the thicker paints like CARC call for a 1.8-2.0 tip and I think these are 1.4, but I haven't had any issues.

How bad would it be to brush or roll on the Behr paint onto my M35? I don't have spray equipment. So it's either roll and brush, or spray can paint.
According to a former Army friend (also a member here) they used brushes, rollers, paper towels and mops to paint the trucks. Whatever they had on hand in order to get ready.

I painted two of my trucks with Rapco rattle canes and did not sand the runs down from the military so as to keep the "fresh from the military" look. Another friend on her said to not wash the mud off either before parades, I don't.

They also just welded patches over rust holes and painted over them. Both my parade trucks have them, no sanding or grinding of the welds.

The trucks look like they just came out of the field sans bullet holes. I want my trucks to look like they are real. They do except the 5-ton says USN and CV-63 (Kitty Hawk) on the front bumper. We didn't have many 5-tons on the aircraft carrier.

Your mileage may vary.
